The two nations plan to develop the technology amid growing tension caused by China's economy and North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.

It also comes as India continues to be embroiled in a fatal dispute with Pakistan, with reports of soldiers crossing borders before carrying out shootings.

And the duo have also promised unmanned ground vehicles which could turn the future battlefield on its head.

Japanese State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kentaro Sonoura, said: "You should expect to see increased bilateral cooperation between us to develop unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) and robotics.

Japan's intention is to start this quickly, possibly by the end of this month.

"We need to share the importance of the rule of law and freedom of navigation among related countries.

"The next step is infrastructure development based on global standards so that connectivity among countries is increased."

An unnamed source from India's Centre for Artificial Intelligence added: "The aim is to equip our armed forces with systems that are self-reliant, adaptable and fault-tolerant."

It comes after the Indo-Japanese civil nuclear agreement was struck last year for energy security, paving the way for the latest agreement between the two over defence.

China and India have also been at odds in recent months over territory in the Himalaya mountains.

India are reported to be furious with its neighbour over military drills in the region, which the country says belongs to its ally Bhutan.
