Ahmadiyya mosque imam hacked by 3-man team

Imam Mostafizur Rahman was hacked with sharp weapons indiscriminately inside the mosque around 9pm

The imam of an Ahmadiyya mosque in Mymensingh was critically injured after he was hacked by a group of three youths inside the mosque Monday night in a suspected militant attack.

Imam Mostafizur Rahman, 35, of Khanpur mosque in Ishwarganj area was hacked with sharp weapons indiscriminately around 9pm after the Esha prayers. The attackers tried to flee as locals came to his rescue.

The imam was first taken to the Upazila health Complex and then shifted to Mymensingh Medical College as his condition deteriorated.

One of the three attackers, Ahad, has been detained by the locals. He is also undergoing treatment at the hospital under police custody. Ahad hails from Kalmakanda of Netrokona.

Police Superintendent Syed Nurul Islam visited the injured imam at the hospital around 10:30pm. He hoped that the two others would be arrested soon. He, however, did not say anything about the motive of the attack.

OC Badrul Alam of Ishwarganj police could not be reached over the phone.

Mostafizur hails from Dohanda village under Kahalu Upazila in Dinajpur. He has been working at the mosque for the last two years.

Earlier, members of militant group New JMB carried out a suicide attack on an Ahmadiyya mosque in Rajshahi’s Baghmara on December 25, 2015. Ten devotees were injured in the bomb attack. International terrorist group Islamic State claimed responsibilities for the attack.

The suicide bomber, Md Tarek Aziz alias Musa, was killed in the explosion while Jamal Uddin, who helped Aziz to carry the bomb inside the mosque, was killed in a shoot-out at Godagari of Rajshahi on June 7, 2016, a day after his arrest.

New JMB has carried out most of its attacks with the help of three-man teams.

The Ahmadiyya community people are termed anti-Islamic by local Islamist groups including Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam. Hefazat urged the government to ban Ahmadiyyas in its 13-point demands placed in 2013.

Ahmadiyya supporters and mosques have come under violent attacks in different places across the country over the last few decades.

The 'good' news - if there can be such a thing...locals came to help and actually apprehended one of the sons of bitches. Hopefully the other two will be apprehended soon and RAB/CTU will do what they do best.

Gun these bastards down - no need to jail them and feed them with tax payers money.

What has happened that we are getting these morons going round trying to kill people in the name of religion?
Radicalism is on the rise all around the world...no reason Bangladesh would be immune from it. Thing is everybody needs to recognize the very real dangers these a-holes present, but we still have far too many people who look to find excuses for them.

Worse still - of course there are those who defend their actions.

I am sure that the vast majority of BD'shis will be appalled at what has happened. The government and law enforcement agencies must be fully supported to stamp this evil out of society.

They should be and the majority would be.

But, what happens with these sorts of attacks is...the extremists quite cleverly divert the conversation to

'Are the Ahmadiyya even muslim?'

Whereas any sane person knows - that is beside the point. The issue here at it's core should be about a person going about their daily life, minding their own business...being attacked by criminals. Yet, the 'debate' moves away from this to - are they muslim - if not, are they committing blashphemy...if yes, isn't it the duty of a true muslim to strike down these infidel.

See the 'chain of logic'? I've seen this time and time again.

Thing is, as far as Islam is concerned - this is the dark age. We are anti-science, anti-progress and worst of all, anti-intelligence and debate. It's going to continue to get even uglier - before things start to get better.

*I have faith, it will get better.

BD law must be applied and nothing else - Every citizen has the same right to security/life as anyone else.

Anything else will destroy everyone's security and peace.

Am curious - India recognizes them as Muslims, Pakistan doesn't. Where does BD stand on the issue legally?

The past BNP-Jamaat government 'officially' banned them from publications. But, didn't take away their muslim designation.

The current AL govt came under pressure 3 years ago to legally label them as non-muslims etc etc....the govt has yet to give into the demand of the zealots.

But...who knows what might happen in the future.

muslims take islam way too srsly imo lmao
I'd say it was the opposite. If Muslims took Islam seriously - Muslims and Islam wouldn't be where we/it is today.

The average muslim today can't see the forest for the trees. We're stuck debating the minutiae and have lost the essence and spirit of our faith.

People identify themselves not our government. India can not be an ideal example of how state would run.
