It have everything to do with the Ruskies. If they keep losing their former allies/partners to evil West, they will get pushed into the Chinese camp and we'll lose their present neutrality. They can leak all the important and classified matter about what constitutes 70% our military hardware to the Chinese in case of war even if we stop all future transactions with them of the 'strategic' nature.
Diplomacy is not run on emotion. We need to look at it from cost/benefit point of view. Chinese calling us inferior harms us how exactly? We only need to concern ourselves with the benefits we can derive from them and the costs they can make us pay.
As for the Malabar exercise, I'd say we must not judge our foreign policy based on individual events like these. We don't know the inside story and I refuse to accept the media explanation that our policy-makers even under the appalling UPA, have desisted Japanese participation out of fear of the Chinese. Our ties with the Japanese are steadfast.
I don't India's exposure to Russia is as much as you are making it out to be, irrespective of the amount Russia equipment India fields.
In Navy, there is barely any sensitive tech that is from Russia. India has kilo submarines, but they China too have Kilos from Russia. Russia already supplied same submarine to China, thus no secrets to be leaked there. India has Akula SSN, but Russians themselves field those SSNs for themselves, and as there is a saying about secrets "if you wants something to be a secret, keep it to yourself". It is improbable that Russians would screw their SSN force just to help Chinese neutralize a single SSN with India. In Naval Aviation, Mig29K is not a secret weapon. Chinese have access to Mig29 for 30 years atleast.
In Airforce, while Russian aircrafts form majority of India's fleet, but nearly all of them barring SU-30MKI, and Mig29s are slated to be retired in next 5 years. Of the two, Mig29 is "Russia proof" as we have put our own and Israeli Avionics on SU-30, an aircraft which anyways was with China in its Su-30MKK version. Our only open flank here is not yet materialized FGFA.
In Army, there is not much that Russians could leak.
I say our exposure vis-a-vis Russia is quiet limited. Though this does not mean that we should spoil our relation with them.
