New Delhi: With Chinese troops crossing over into Chumar sector in Ladakh region thrice in five days, India and China are set to hold border talks today.

The talks, called the 'Working Mechanism for consultation and coordination on India-China border affairs,' will have foreign and military officials on both sides and will be the third time this mechanism group meets.

The operational-level talks will look at the nitty-gritties of the ground situation and how to resolve incursions on the ground. It will also be reviewed if existing mechanisms work properly.

Sources have told NDTV that the fallout of China's incursion in April in Despang in Ladakh, which resulted in a 21-day face off, and the lessons learnt from it are to be discussed. Other incursions that have followed Despang will also be brought up by India, say sources.

Chinese troops had reportedly crossed over into Indian territory thrice - on July 16, 18, and 20. On each of these occasions, the soldiers intruded about three kilometres into the Indian side and spent several hours before going back.

The reported incursions came on the back of the Indian Army getting the go-ahead to raise a 50,000-strong Mountain Strike Corps along the border with China. The move is a major boost to the Army's war-fighting capabilities along the Line of Actual Control that has witnessed several instances of incursion by Chinese troops.

Chumar, located 300km from Leh, has been an area where there are major differences in perception on both sides over what the Line of Actual Control is. But what has alarmed New Delhi is the frequency of the incursions - a similar incident was also reported in June.
