Coimbatore, May 21:

Mumbai has emerged as the second-most liveable city in the world, according to an Ericsson ConsumerLab survey. The liveability factor has been tied to connectivity. Stockholm topped the list.

India's business capital has in the survey outranked cities such as New York, London and Los Angeles.

The 30-minute online survey (with 1,500 participants per city) was carried out in Cairo, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Stockholm, Beijing, Moscow, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Seoul, London, Los Angeles, New York and Hong Kong.

“Urbanization is a global mega-trend. City populations grow by 7500 people per hour, and people are clearly feeling some stress from overcrowding. We also saw how with the use of ICT, (Information and Communication Technology) people in cities alleviated such feelings and got on with city life,” said the Head of Research at Ericsson ConsumerLab, Mr Michael Bjorn.

The survey found that the average commute time in the 13 cities was two hours, twenty minutes per day.

“People are more relaxed when they know how long their commute will take, as this enables them to use their time more efficiently. Smart-phones are becoming an invaluable tool on the daily commute,' said Mr Bjorn.

“Big cities are hotbeds for creativity, bringing together people from different walks of life. The sheer number of social opportunities is what makes life alluring in such cities,” he said.

Some issues

City dwellers seemed most satisfied with the abundance of restaurants, pubs, cafes, shopping malls, supermarkets and entertainment facilities, apart from mobile network and water distribution.

Traffic and parking, air quality, overall cleanliness and the manner of communication by authorities frustrated city dwellers the most, according to the survey.

The findings further revealed that women in Mumbai and Tokyo were slightly happier living in cities than men; and young people were found happier than the old in Cairo and Seoul. This was in contrast to Mumbai, Stockholm and Tokyo, where the aged ones were most content.

You've got to be f*****g kidding me.

*facepalm*

I don't care what some warped survey says.
If you're a Billionaire living in Malabar Hill, maybe.

If you live in Ghatkopar and have to commute to VT/CST every day....

no way.

. . . . . . .
Dubai...

Clean city - getting cleaner, Metro system connecting almost the entire city, plus bus system, plus water taxis and of course cars running relatively cheaper petrol.

Almost no violent crimes (or at least one that a common man sees or hears about), good health facilities, good internet facilities, availability of latest gizmos, a place where anyone with the 'smarts' can make it big.

It's expensive though compared to what most people make over here, but then thats just the expats, the locals make more than they can spend - all of them. But if you are talking liveability, thats definitely Dubai.

It may be True. For as little as 12 Rs, You can travel 20 Km to and Fro. No Where in the World Maybe you have Such Cheap Subsidized Public Transport System.

For AED 6 you can travel the entire length of Dubai through the metro. (75 km)

For Aed 3 through the Buses. (> 75 Km)

These are good clean environment and on time facilities with total security and air conditioning.

Finally, looks like someone read the article and posted.
This may be a stupid and inconclusive survey, but I am in Delhi and have heard some really good things about Mumbai's growing infrastructure specially in the suburbs. So waiting for some mumbaikars' feedback.

Look What a Foreigner Has to Say:

Safety:

Mumbai: Oh Mumbai! How much can I praise thee in this regard! Let me count the ways! I have never ever lived in a city where it is completely OK to walk down the street in a pair of shorts, even if it is in the middle of the madness that accompanies Ganesh Chaturthi. No one ever looks twice at you, there are no wolf whistles or cat calls, and cab drivers and auto drivers are unfazed by giggling girls demanding to be taken home at 2am.

Then You have the Bombay Capitalism - Nearly the Most Croony and Cunning Capitalism out There! :D Far More Capitalistic than Even China Could ever be!

Last time I went to Mumbai was 4 years ago, so my information is not up to date, but I find that Mumbai is just too crowded and slowly going down the drain. I am neither a Maharashtrian or a Shiv Sena supporter, but we need to build new cities for villagers to migrate to because at the current rate, we might see all 1.2 billion Indians living in Mumbai in a few years. Mumbai is as cosmopolitan as it gets, but there is just no personal space, too many people and too little space IMHO.

Dont get your panties in a twist. Its just a survey.
