After Bengaluru metro row, Chennai metro clarifies no Hindi on sign boards

Depends on the number of people who reside in Chennai and only understand Hindi, I don't think there are many so probably it's not needed. But if there are many migrants who understand only Hindi in Chennai then having Hindi signboards would make sense.

Written Hindu has always been a political tinderbox in India.

On the other hand, spoken Hindi remains our national link tongue.

Nothing else even comes close.

Cheers, Doc
everytime a random Indian tries to strike a conversation with me in hindi, I utter some south-indianish word while bobbing my head... my skin color does the rest in warding off such people.

It's no sin to be black my friend.

South Indianish word means what? There are many south Indian tongues.

Let me tag a Tamil, a Telugu and a Mallu here ....

I hope Tamil Nadu can reclaim lost dravidian land and form a country of their own. First step is to deny Hindi.

its no longer anti Hindi its anti India, but such news dont make it to mainstream (or international) news

even for those who dont know Tamil, the title sends the message and that the reason why India is using Goondas Act (and the neutered state govt) to stifle Tamil students fight for freedom

you mean you could not..?
if you include hindi then you got to include other indian languages and soon realize the signboards too big(or the letters too small).
Unless the area has sizable hindi speaking population, I dont see the point of writing in hindi

with India becoming more prosperous there will be Hindi speaking people with little knowledge of English visiting Southern states

Depends on the number of people who reside in Chennai and only understand Hindi,.

Those who reside in Chennai MUST learn Tamil. Knowledge of Tamil should be made requirement for jobs in Tamil Nadu

everytime a random Indian tries to strike a conversation with me in hindi,.

I am usually polite and well mannered. If some one talk to me in Hindi I go berserk. I use foul language. That fellow will think thrice again to start a conversation in hindi

with India becoming more prosperous there will be Hindi speaking people with little knowledge of English visiting Southern states

Then they should hire Hindi knowing local guides to show them places. Or bring a Hindi-English travelers dictionary.

All big and vibrant cities are cosmopolitan in nature, you can make Chennai an international city or a Tamilian ghetto it's your choice. Having signboards in 'x' language is all about convenience for others, there are sign board in Punjabi in Canada still Canadians don't cry like you insecure people do.

Fabrication and political bullying.

All I can see is a desperation by divisive parties.

All public signboards in India are in the following order:

1- Regional language (wherever applicable)
2- Hindi
3- English

Last attempt by regionalist factions to have some relevance in politics; soon to be wiped out.

with India becoming more prosperous there will be Hindi speaking people with little knowledge of English visiting Southern states

Don't blame the people.

It is the fabrication of some corrupt parties which are right now getting wiped out from the Opposition as well.

They will do whatever it takes to grab attention.

Even if it means orchestrating riots and public harm.

Still your guys are not under standing, we are not against Hindi, but we are against if they are forcing, this started Because of Central Government forcing Hindi on us, There are classes available for learning hindi in TN and we are not against teaching hindi or who is willing to learn,

Why it's compalsary to learn Hindi, where we have Tamil and English

My Question is why we need to go to Prostitute when we have Beautiful wife?
This question always discussed in TN when ever Hindi Problem arises

Well they were supposed to use 3 language sign boards (Local Language, Hindi and English). The fuss made by parochial people is use only Local language and English and omit Hindi. Now how is that forcing Hindi on someone, it's just for convenience of North Indian in Southern states (I believe there would be lakhs). If it would have been use only Hindi and English and omit the local language I could understand the forcing part but that is not the case. Marathi, Gujrati, Bengali, Marwadi etc etc nobody gets threatened by Hindi, so there is no reason that Tamil should.

hindi hypocrisy , so wheres is Hindi ?

why would you discourage tourism from North India ?

The Chennai metro has been using Tamil and English languages on their signboards at stations

After the three-language signboards were removed from metro rail stations in Bengaluru, the Chennai metro rail authority has clarified that the three-language system will not be followed in the metro rail network in the city and Hindi will not be part of any of the signboards at the stations.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) official told The Times of India that they are not going to introduce three-language system at metro stations. The Chennai metro has been using Tamil and English languages on their signboards at stations and trains since its inauguration in 2015.

Despite CMRL using Tamil and English on its signboards, after online and offline campaigns against imposing Hindi in Bengaluru, there was apprehension among certain sections of commuters and others that Hindi will be introduced at Chennai metro stations also.

Kochi metro has been following three languages on all signboards and name boards. A Kochi metro official told TOI that it was mandatory to follow three-language system in metro stations according to the Official Languages Act. They added that they do not follow three languages while doing announcements due to time constraints.

In Bengaluru, last month, several Hindi language sign boards were vandalised. After campaigns by Kannada groups, metro officials started removing Hindi from the boards.

Many Kannada groups and even the Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah had objected to the three-language policy by the central government on metros that mandated the use of Hindi along with English and the local language.

The Urban Development Department's order, dated December 9, 2016, makes it compulsory for non-Hindi speaking states to use Hindi in Metro signs.

Chennai Metro rail is in the process of completing last stage of the phase-1 of the project and has started preliminary work on the stage-2, reported TOI.

You don't want to move around India? You want to stay in Tamil Nadu all your life?
