Afghanistan’s National Army wants to adopt NATO-standard equipment, including Leopard tanks to be acquired from allied nations.

Australia and Norway have already indicated they would be interested in providing Leopard 1 tanks to Afghanistan’s Army, according to a senior NATO source. The Army currently uses T-62 tanks, and most of its existing equipment is Russian-based.
The Army will also switch from the Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifle to M16s and M4s, said U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Robert Durbin, head of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan (CSTC-A). Up-Armored Humvees and tracked M113 armored personnel carriers have already been provided to the Army, he added.

Mostly I think the push for NATO style equipment is not to defeat Taliban, but to do other Indian sponsered stuff. E.g. fighting against Pakistan on the border. I mean even NATO with those equipment cannot take on Talibans, as it is now. As Gen (R) Aslam Beg said: The forces that are in Tribal area cannot be defeated by any military. I think he is referring to how the Afghans have been through out the history. That it is their ideology and ideologies can not be won by tanks or laser guided precision bombs. What do you guys think?

Who's going to pay for this NATO standard equipement? Afghan govenmernt is run by foreign aid and donations, 50% of revuenes are generated from drugs.
GDP stands at $8.8 billion, population 32 million growing by 2.8% per annum, GDP per Capita $275, lower than most sub saharan countries!

What for ?

yeh to use these by Warlords against each other for getting hold of the country after US withdraws and till US is there to use against Pakistan just as they did during recent border clash .
the NATO/US already had made the blunder by providing them even aircrafts. the same weapons they are providing them will hunt them in future
