Afghanistan love affair with Mi-25/35 Hinds can be traced back to early 70’s when Soviet union supplied early models of Mil Mi-24 Attack helicopters which were found quite effective against Mujahideen guerrillas . when Soviets intervened in Afghanistan in early 80’s equally competent where Soviet Pilots and equally gained a fearsome reputation among guerrillas who nicknamed it ” Shaitan-Arba ” which translates into Satan’s chariot .
Hinds in Afganistan flew with impunity and Mujahideen with early western supplied Shoulder-launched heat seeking missiles had little success to their credit but it all changed when CIA started supplying next generation American FIM-92 Stinger MANPADS to Mujahideens which were highly effective aginst Hinds and literally forced Soviets to change their tactics .
Just before soviet withdrawal , 3 to 5 MI-24s belonging to Afghan air force deflected to Pakistan and after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan , for initial few years Taliban operated MI-24s with Rogue pilots but that too soon became inoperable owing to lack of spares and skilled manpower to take care of their maintenance .
Just when it seemed Hinds have finally fallen silent and its distinctive rotor sound will never be able to strike fear again in the heart of rebels, 9/11 attacks happened and Us backed war against Taliban saw the establishment of a new government which saw Afghan air force being reequipped with 6 retired MI-24s supplied by the Czech Republic .
Mi-24s were back in action providing close air support to Afghan army in fight against Taliban but ageing fleet supplied were not in best of the conditions and even with direct Russian help on their maintenance and training only one Mi-24s was operational by 2015 that when Afgan government asked India to step in and supply some of their upgraded Mi-35s to their airforce.
India on Afgan requests stepped in and agreed to supply 4 Hinds from its inventory for free and also agreed to train their crew in India . First Indian supplied Hind flew by the end of 2015 in Afghanistan and till now all four are already in the inventory of Afghan air force . upgraded and modern Hinds supplied by India have been very effective against air support operations against Taliban and ISIS which has been acknowledged by US military commanders.
India plans to retire Hinds and is open to supply few more of Gunships with spares to Afgan air force in near future after it takes deliveries of American Apache Gunships and also is in talks to supply India’s light Combat helicopters which have been specially designed for high altitude operations .
