The war in Afghanistan would end in few weeks if Pakistan denied the Taliban safe haven in its territory, a top U.S. Senator said. Senator Lindsey Graham said the United States should negotiate with Pakistan instead of the Taliban to see an end to the war in Afghanistan.

“As to negotiating with the Taliban, I think we got this wrong. I think what we should do is start negotiating with Pakistan. If Pakistan denied the Taliban safe haven in Pakistan, the war in Afghanistan would end in a matter of weeks,” Graham said in an interview to Fox News on Monday.

Talks with Taliban resume
Washington resumed talks with the Taliban in Qatar on Saturday, three months after President Donald Trump had abruptly halted diplomatic efforts that could end America’s longest war. Mr. Trump called the year-long effort “dead” and withdrew an invitation to the insurgents to join secret talks at his U.S. retreat at Camp David after the killing of an American soldier.

Mr. Graham also said that he wants to change the behaviour of Pakistan. “So, I want to try to get Pakistan to change their behaviour through a free trade agreement tied to security performances, then talk to the Taliban. I want as much leverage over the Taliban as possible to end this war,” he added.

Pakistan doesn't control the Taliban, it only has influence. If the US wants the war to end, it should pull out of Afghanistan. If the US wants assurances that Afghanistan won't become a hub of terror, it needs to strike a deal with Pakistan and the Taliban. Both would likely have to work together in the future to keep Afghanistan secure, neither party can do it on their own. The US and international community needs to pump the money they pump into war, into re-building Afghanistan. People with jobs, food, homes and aspirations don't become suicide bombers.

Any trade agreement with Pakistan should be on it's own merits and not tied into security in Afghanistan. A secure, stable Afghanistan is in there interests of Pakistan even more than the USA, we have a common goal, but the US has tried to use India and pro-India entities to achieve that goal, which is at odds with Pakistan's national security interests. If they'd addressed this concern a decade ago, we wouldn't be where we are today.

The Taliban insurgency has significant local support within Afghanistan and would not last without it. Pakistan can’t do much more than try and encourage the Taliban to engage with the US. Tying anything to ‘ending safe havens in Pakistan’ will be doomed to failure - how are these ‘safe havens’ & the numbers of Taliban allegedly crossing the border from Pakistan into Afghanistan tangibly measured?

If there is a credible means of measurement, will it be shared with Pakistan and will Pakistan agree? To me this ‘safe havens’ bull crap is basically the NDS feeding fake intel to the US to keep the money flowing.

Why can't people in US understand that there is civil war going in Afghanistan. Its like USSR all over again. Local government is corrupt to the core and kills anyone who is against them. People who are effected by Govt. joins Talibans and vice versa.
It's a cycle which won't end without a settlement between NA and the Talibans.

Moreover they want us to open another front with Afghan Talibans which is very very bad for Pakistan.
