BAGRAM: A rocket fired on a US airbase in Afghanistan early on Tuesday damaged the aircraft of America’s top military officer and wounded two maintenance crew, officers said.

Two rockets struck the vast Bagram air field overnight, with one causing damage to the C-17 used by General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, who departed the base later Tuesday using another plane.

The C-17 that was hit was parked on the runway along with an array of other aircraft.

Two American maintenance crew suffered minor injuries in the attack, officers said.

He took off on another plane so I don't think he feels hurt at all. Course I thought the headlines meant it attacked him while he was on the plane.

this is something new to me, as i don't remember hearing of an attack on bagram for last many years. And that also a rocket attack.

You have no idea how much this would hurt the American chief. He can fly in all the plane he wants but you didnt get the message from this attack. Its supposed to say that we are not too far from US air bases too and you all are being watched;)

now to those who argue that pakistani millitary is not able to defend its assets should see this as well. all the western and indian media should also answer now why US is not able to defend a small airbase and that too when its miliatry chief's aircraft is there. its shows how much control they have and after spending soo much they cann't even protect their chief's aircraft. its time they accept reality and stop blaming others for their bad planning and millitary failure in afghanistan.

You have no idea that they always launch rocket attacks all the time. Have you not notice? You don't need to see it even you know where it is at. Besides why fire only one? Why not fire more than one if you think the general is on board.

This sends a message that it can't be CIA because of the so call sophistication of the attacks. Because of the sophistication of the attack on a Joint Chiefs of Staff's aircraft that means a few terrorists can do it against Pakistan's military base. So thank you for explaining it.

Afghan rocket strike hits top US general’s plane

Insurgents fired rockets into an American base, damaging a parked plane

Insurgents fired rockets into an American base in Afghanistan early Tuesday, damaging the parked plane of the visiting chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, the US military said. The general was safe in his quarters at the time and later left the country aboard another aircraft.

The Taliban were quick to claim the rocket strike that hit the C-17 military transport plane of US Army Gen. Martin Dempsey as another propaganda coup. The militants also have said their fighters shot down a US helicopter that crashed last week, killing seven Americans, though US officials cast doubt on both insurgent claims.

Dempsey was in Afghanistan to discuss the state of the 10-year-old war as well as a string of disturbing killings of US military trainers by their Afghan partners or militants dressed in Afghan uniform. Such attacks - which the Taliban also claim to be behind - killed 10 Americans in the last two weeks alone, threatening morale and raising questions about the international coalition’s strategy to train Afghan security forces so they can fight the insurgency after foreign troops end their combat role in 2014.

Dempsey “was nowhere near” the plane when the two rockets landed near the parked aircraft at around 1 am Tuesday at Bagram Air Field outside Kabul, said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the US military and the international coalition. Shrapnel from the rockets damaged the plane and also a nearby helicopter, a coalition statement said.

Two aircraft maintenance workers were lightly wounded by shrapnel, Graybeal said.

The general wrapped up his talks in Afghanistan and departed Tuesday morning on a different plane, the military said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Dempsey’s aircraft was targeted by insurgents “using exact information” about where it would be.

Graybeal disputed any claim of a precision attack. He said that insurgent rocket and mortar attacks are “not infrequent” at Bagram and that such fire most often comes from so far away that it’s virtually impossible to hit specific targets.

Wilkinson also said it was unlikely the attack was aimed specifically at Dempsey’s plane. “Indirect fire at Bagram is not unusual, so we don’t believe his aircraft was targeted.”

Bagram is a sprawling complex about an hour’s drive north of Kabul that usually serves as the first point of entrance for US officials visiting the country. It is the hub for military operations in the east of the country and the largest US base in Afghanistan.

Dempsey was in Afghanistan to discuss the state of the war after a particularly deadly few weeks for Americans in the more than 10-year-old war as international forces begin drawing down.

He and the chief of US Central Command, Marine Gen. James R. Mattis, met with NATO and US Afghan commander Gen. John Allen in Kabul and also with a number of senior Afghan and coalition leaders.

Among the topics was the escalating number of “insider attacks” in which Afghan security forces or militants dressed in Afghan uniform turn their guns on coalition military trainers. Once an anomaly, such attacks have been climbing in recent months. There have been 32 of them so far this year, up from 21 for all of 2011, according to NATO.

Taliban supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar last week said the killings were the result of an insurgent campaign of infiltration, though NATO has said it’s too early to tell if the attacks were related to the insurgency or caused by personal disputes turned deadly.

The Taliban also claimed to have shot down a US military helicopter that crashed during a firefight with insurgents in a remote area of southern Afghanistan on Thursday, killing seven Americans and four Afghans on board.

US officials, however, said initial reports were that enemy fire was not involved in the crash.

Tuesday’s insurgent attack was the second this year to come uncomfortably close to a high-level US official visiting Afghanistan.

In March, an attacker tried to ram a car into a delegation waiting to greet US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at Bastion Air Field in southern Afghanistan as his C-17 taxied toward the landing ramp. US defense officials said Panetta was never in any danger, but if the attacker had waited just a few more minutes, Panetta’s plane would have been at the ramp.

So you admit that the Pakistani Army has as much control over their own country as the US has over a foriegn country 1000's of miles away...you must be sooo proud...

I ve never heard news relating to attacks on a US chief Transport plane and that too in a US airbase. You may say that it was a warning call for the US that you damage our AC we will damage yours. These attacks show how vulnerable are the US senior personnel and their aircraft's. I mean if the attackers wanted to destroy they already had an aim at the AC, may be they missed their objective or they achieved it. Just my thoughts.
