Afghan Government Could Collapse Six Months After U.S. Withdrawal, New Intelligence Assessment Says

Taliban advances prompt agencies to revise outlook for how long Kabul can hold out

KABUL—The U.S. intelligence community concluded last week that the government of Afghanistan could collapse as soon as six months after the American military withdrawal from the country is completed, according to officials with knowledge of the new assessment.

American intelligence agencies revised their previously more optimistic estimates as the Taliban swept through northern Afghanistan last week, seizing dozens of districts and surrounding major cities. The new assessment of the overall U.S. intelligence community, which hasn’t been previously reported, has now aligned more closely with the analysis that had been generated by the U.S. military.

The military has already withdrawn more than half of its 3,500 troops and its equipment, with the rest due to be out by Sept. 11.

On Wednesday, Taliban fighters were battling government troops inside the northern city of Kunduz after occupying the main border crossing with Tajikistan the previous day and reaching the outskirts of northern Afghanistan’s main hub, Mazar-e-Sharif. Tajikistan’s border service said 134 Afghan troops at the crossing were granted refuge while some 100 others were killed or captured by the Taliban.

On multiple occasions in recent days, government forces surrendered to the Taliban, leaving behind convoys of Humvees and stockpiles of weaponry, including artillery pieces, mortars and heavy machine guns.

Taliban rule of Afghanistan was the peacefull years of Durand line. We saw no infiltration, no smuggling etc. So there is previous data to analyse what CAN happen. ISIS is not a friend of Taliban, if you remember Taliban were fighting ISIS while ANA was giving Heli support to ISIS terrorists and were dropping bombs on Taliban positions. So you need to be afraid of ANA+ISIS Nexis. Not Taliban.

once Taliban takeover afghanistan. They are free to rule which ever way they want best for their country... It won't effect our country as Taliban can not dictate Pakistan in its internal matters. Same is true for us, we won't be able to dictate them..

Looking forward to the Talibans rule. Afghanistan at peace, and peace with Pakistan.

They will not tolerate any foreign groups, ISIS or whoever. They will seek international recognition.

On this website I saw an intrview of a Pakistani general and diplomat who went to Kabul before the US invasion. They said categorically that Mullah Omar didn't want Al-Quaida in Afghanistan, but couldn't force them out.

Prior to 911 the Taliban, with Pakistan's help, were trying to gain international recognition. The idea of the Taliban harbouring militant groups who will attack their neighbours, and in the process increase their isolation, in laughable.

Dude these guys are Neanderthal you really think these guys are going to keep their thing to themselves?!
What has happened is that ISIS fackos have put out so much savagery out there that now some people think these guys are normal.

Interesting times we’re living in. But the funny part in all this, is that it takes office desk boys in black suits and all to give us this assessment. PDF members for years have been saying this will all end up in failure.

They are animals. We shouldn't differentiate between the good and the bad talibans. All are cut from same cloth. Even though were created by our own mistakes

Even Lindsey Graham made this most exact assessment on National television years ago. He says 12 months, but 6 months seems more likely. it’s not so much the Talibs will take over but the government will breakdown and only exist in name only. The six ANA corps were all based on different ethnicities. The government never really got over the ethnic difference and integrated. Nation building never really succeeded and hence the facade was bound to fail when pressed hard enough.

This Potemkin village wasn’t built to last
