Increasing cross border attacks, ISIS presence across the border and the winding up of operation Zarb-e-Azb calls for a heavily secured AF-PAK border. The absence of functional border security forces on the other side has added to Pakistan's troubles. With the increasing militant capabilities, Pakistan also, has to adapt to modern solutions. Please keep in mind that the purpose of this article is not to undermine the need for economical and educational upliftment of the local population, but to voice what is perhaps an equally necessary step to containing militancy and maintaining peace.
Many countries, namely, India, Israel and Saudi Arabia, facing troubled borders and unconventional warfare, have adopted such monitoring systems that consist of Electro-Optical sensors and/or Ground Surveillance radars, and have been fairly successful in their efforts.
A few systems that are being marketed are mentioned below.
Aselsan Arslan Mobile border Surveillance System
Security Systems | Capabilities | ASELSAN

The system mentioned above is being offered by Aselsan of Turkey. It consists of mobile GSRs and E/O systems and thus built for situations where it is not appropriate to use stationary surveillance systems due to geographical restrictions or operational criteria.
Another good system is the long range Ground Observer 80 GSR that is being offered by Thales. It has a 24 km detection range for pedestrians, and up to 80 km for larger targets.

A network of a hundered mobile posts consisting of GO-80s, Remote Controlled Weapon Stations and E/O sensors mounted on armoured vehicles can cover the entire AF-PAK border. They can also be coupled with additional RCWS mounted armoured vehicles for protection and threat interception.
UAVs that are already being used by the Pakistani forces can also be used to complement the ground systems.
By now, most of you might be wondering about the cost of such a project. All this can be done with a few 100 million dollars. Let me remind you that the cost of operation Zarb-e-Azb has been more than $2 billion and border security has to be maintained if the gains are to be retained. At this point, i would also stress that the acquisitions related to war on terror are very crucial and demand preference over those required for our eastern border because they are needed for a war that is on-going.
Let us close this damned border and shift our focus on other pressing matters.
