UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan Friday called for making arrangements for swift deployment of additional Pakistan Army units and equipment that a special United Nations team had picked for service in the US peacekeeping missions around the world, while reaffirming its commitment to the world body's flagship activity.

“We strongly recommend that the UN support mechanism may now be geared up for speedy deployment of selected units to UN missions,” Pakistani Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi told a follow-up meeting of the recent Leaders Summit on Peacekeeping.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, as a co-host of the Leaders Summit on Peacekeeping last September, had announced additional pledges, including an infantry battalion, transport, engineering and signal companies, additional utility helicopters, a level-II and a level-III hospital for deployment in future UN peacekeeping missions.

The UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Lodhi said, had just concluded a successful visit to Pakistan during which it assessed the readiness of the troops for deployment and their conformity to the pledges the country's leadership had made.

“This is our collective endeavour and we all need to take steps to make it a success,” the Pakistani envoy told delegates.

“Pakistan's commitment to UN Peacekeeping remains strong, consistent and unstinting,” she added.

“We continue to figure among the world's top troop contributors. Our peacekeepers have an exemplary track record of delivering in testing circumstances and in implementing and fulfilling demanding mandates with professionalism and distinction.”

More than 7,000 uniformed personnel from Pakistan are serving in seven peacekeeping missions, making it one of the top troop-and-police contributors.

Ambassador Lodhi also backed the UK initiative for a ministerial-level meeting in London in September to follow up on the pledges made at the Leaders Summit, and said that Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif would attend it.

She added: “Pakistan continues its commitment and resolve to live up to our responsibility as a major troop contributor and to fulfill our obligations in this regard. We stand ready to deliver on the pledges made at the Leaders Summit.”

Earlier this month, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon lauded Pakistani peacekeepers for their service under the UN flag in hot spots around the world, saying they had made valuable contribution in maintaining peace as well as helping communities suffering from war.

“For well over half a century, Pakistani peacekeeping troops have seen injustice in far off places and been forces for a better world,” he said at a reception hosted by Lodhi to commemorate Pakistani Peacekeepers Day.

For anything else, we claim to be "thin stretched", "hands full" but for $$$ from UN additional forces are always available.

What exactly are you pointing too? It is not that we will be buying those fanboy favorite Su35s or the EF for these UN missions. Will like to know what you are referring to in this post.

may be they are!! May be I am. :)
Why don't you enlighten us all?

Here, let me put it again for you;
What exactly are you pointing too by the claims of being "thin stretched" or "hand full". It is not that we will be buying those fanboy favorite Su35s or the EF for these UN missions if it is money you are referring to! What else it is, will be glad to know.

Money makes honey my friend, your line of thinking is just too narrowly focused. A tap has closed or is about to be closed everybody knows that, army needs other taps to stay afloat. PAF doesn't deploys for UN peacekeeping, army does. The same army was claiming to be domestically occupied when Saudis were calling for a little while ago. Now for politically safe $$$s from UN, the army can spare more.

So in all these jumbled up words, the answer to my question is that "The same army was claiming to be domestically occupied when Saudis were calling for a little while ago", THIS is what you were referring too?

Plus if you would like to have another go, do let everyone know where did you got the impression that i was saying that PAF deploys for UN missions? :) I was referring to money issues as i thought you were pointing to that.

Anyway, the thing is that by that "stretched thin" remark you were referring too the Saudis-Yemen incident?

Of course, that mist be it, not the diplomatic leverage we get, not the influence and goodwill that we manage to earn in many places which we can later cash in on.

And, yes we are no longer stretched thin. Most of the big troop commitment operations are now over. Unlike last year when Operation Khyber-One and Zarb-e-Azb were in full tilt.

Last April, Khybar-One and NWA ops were in full force. Those both have ended now. We live in a different world than we did 14 months ago. The Army is returning to more peacetime deployments and cycles.

In other news my brother-in-law and his wife were delighted to go to Turkey with friends last year, they said they were child free, but this year when we asked them to go to Maldieves all of a sudden they made the excuse of having a kid, clearly they perfer their friends to us (ok the last might actually be true).

.
Why more? when we had already deployed 7000 troops..
USA, Russia, China, France and UK should deploy more because they are permanent members.

I think it takes nothing more than common sense to understand it or doesn't it? But anyways thanks for going round the circles. For your own country you're a soldier for everyone else, you're a mercenary.

Goodwill? do you know how Pakistani soldiers were massacred by the Somalis? You're a mercenary for UN because in the most war torn territories people don't see anyone as favorable or hero.

That's more of a self satisfying argument than one which depicts ground realities.. Now you have all important CPAC in full swing, more vigilance requirement on hostile western borders and still ongoing zarb-e-azb. So saying that army has now free units on her disposal doesn't make much sense. They need $$$s because US is about to close the tap.

Perhaps i lack that too. However it always help to be in company with visionaries like you, truly en lighted souls!
It would have been easier for people with lesser comprehension skills like me if you had made this point clearer to being with. I will appreciate if you do so in future.

Oh mighty source of knowledge,, you are quoting the wrong person here.
May be i do not understand who to do that either,, perhaps it is you who is right again.

Now for your arrogantly stupid remarks of being mercenaries, wake up kid. Take that thumb out of your mouth and put something nutritious in there, that may help you grow your brain for real as at the end of the day, that is what will matter. Only a kid with no basic knowledge of world politics can pass on such comments like calling UN missions as mercenaries and ridiculing the decision of not going to war with Yemen on Saudi's call. I understand that this is a new word that you learned? Trying to use the? Listen up, the action that you are asking for or the lack of which happening you are making fun of, that is much more suitable to be termed as a mercenary mission. For UN peace keeping mission, perhaps you are not aware it means UNITED NATIONS! The whole world participates in different missions ALL over the world. It is a prestigious force to serve with. Unless you are one of those Taliban retards who hiding in there caves think that the world is moving at their pace.

Questioning why PA never went to Yemen with Saudia and then terming UN peace mission as mercenaries! You seriously need to educate yourself.

Word of advice, do not poke your nose where it do not belongs. Learn to respect others, this is a public forum and not your hose where you can go around bashing everyone including your parents. Understand this and you may have a thing or two to gain from here. Otherwise, not many arrogant people have enjoyed a long stay here.
