Adani to gain from pact with Sweden

New Delhi: SAAB-Adani's joint venture in Gripen fighter jets is likely to get a boost from a decision taken to sign a pact allowing Sweden to transfer military technology to India.
The decision to go ahead with the technology exchange pact was taken during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sweden.
Swedish defence giant SAAB had signed a deal last year with the Adani group, the latest entrant in a long line of Indian business houses in defence, to make the Gripen E fighters under the "Make in India" program.
Gripen, however, will have to win a tender initiated by India last week for fighter jets.
Among those in the race is the Lockheed-TATA combine.
Lockheed Martin Corp. of the US has picked TATA Advanced Systems, a subsidiary of TATA Sons, as its local partner to produce F-16s. France's Dassault Aviation which has a tie-up with Reliance is also likely to be in the fray.
Other possible contenders include the Eurofighter Typhoon, Russia's MiG-35 and Boeing's F/A - 18 Super Hornet, which has a tie-up with HAL and Mahindra.
The request for proposal (RFP) issued by the defence ministry is for 110 combat jets.
The RFP said: "The procurement should have a maximum of 15 per cent aircraft in flyaway state and the remaining 85 per cent aircraft will have to be made in India." It will be in collaboration with a strategic Indian partner.
In all, India may need over 400 fighter jets as it seeks to replace the 1970s vintage MiG series aircraft.
Hindustan Aeronautics's Tejas fighter aircraft is also expected to get a part of the pie. However, manufacturing capacity constraints mean Tejas will not get whole or even a substantial part of the contract.
