A begram ivory piece shows indians using Adaab gesture, it has been proposed that Adaab was invented during Mughal era to replace namate, a hindu greeting with something which both muslims and hindus would be comfortable with

Hindutvas have used this to as a propaganda tool to vilify and stereotype Indian muslims.

Humans have used hand gestures to greet each other since the beginning. The positioning and movement of the hand or hands may vary depending on the culture and time.

One cannot claim to know the origin of the gesture associated the words "adaab". Even the origins of a relatively modern hand gesture like the Nazi salute is disputed.

Such postulations are a waste of time. They only serve political purposes.

lmao

disputed because there is no evidence of prior usage

so when there is an evidence you say its a negative evidence? so whats the origin of Adaab?

No, disputed because there are different and competing theories about prior use.

This is hardly evidence. It is a theory. But like I said, this theory is being put forward with political motives. The origin of a hand gesture is irrelevant. So what if Buddhists/Hindus used it before the Mughals? And how do we know it did not precede them? Its a pointless debate. But it is used for political reasons, just like the "evidence" that the Taj Mahal was a Hindu temple. By promoting these theories, you are helping bigots.

I does actually precede and goes way back to the indus valley civlizations, mesopotamians used the same gesture

This is a maluhan seal from mesopotamia showing greeting indians in akkadian court.

No, disputed because there are different and competing theories about prior use.

It is desputed because scholars thought it was a roman salute but it has no evidence it was used in the roman period.

there are plentiful artistic depictions of adaab greetings though.

As usual BS from indians. Adaab maybe local or mughal but Islamic greeting is Assalam o alaikum... The rest gestures can be cultural. Also no, why would muslims be comfortable with namaste??? These typical stupid hindutva crap that u guys discover will only increase hatred n just a matter of time before another partition.

They're not doing "adaab" in this picture at all. They look like veterinary surgeons to me, about to glove up and deliver another donkey into the world.

Pretty funny but false. Here is a video of Ataturk in Turkey doing the same gesture in 0:15

The 'adaab' gesture was not even invented in india by the mughals, let alone buddhists ; it was introduced to india by the mughals but came from elsewhere
