Acts of Terror Against Christians in India

Attacks against Christians on the rise, says report

Cases of Christians being attacked have more than doubled in the past three years in India with Karnataka and Orissa being the worst according to a report released by a Christian organisation on Wednesday. Maharashtra is among the ten worst states withincreased incidence of communal outfits attacking churches, said the report prepared by the Catholic-Christian Secular Forum (CSF) and released jointly with the All India Secular Forum.

In India, cases of serious crimes against Christians including grievous attacks and murders went up from 150 in 2008 to more than 365 in 2011, a CSF member said. “While the national average of crime came down, anti-minority attacks increased in Karnataka by 90 per cent in the past three years,” said retired justice Michael Saldanha who inquired into several cases in Karnataka.

The report, Rising Anti-Christian Violence — 2011, prepared after compiling government records, media reports and interviews with victims, stated that the number of cases could be more than 1,000 if small incidents were included.

Although Maharashtra did not report cases of murder, there were attacks on churches in many small towns and villages and in tribal areas.

“Intimidation of Christian missionaries, especially in tribal areas are part of the same anti-Christian phenomenon,” Ram Puniyani of Plural India. The report calls Maharashtra the “Hindutva capital” and lists 14 attacks.

“In Orissa, apart from attacking and killing of people who refused to re-convert to Hinduism, many charitable organisations such as leprosy centre, hostels for children were attacked,” said Saumya Uma, a socio-legal activist who works extensively in Orissa.

Activists urged the government to provide compensation, witness protection and livelihood options to those affected.

Yes, we Indian Muslims are suffering in India that's why we are over represented in Indian film industry

Maybe because Muslims are the only ones who are good looking enough to be in Indian movies. By the way, most of those Indian actors can trace their ancestry to present day Pakistan and Afghanistan. Most of you Indian Muslims are not Pathans.

2011 saw 1,000 anti-Christian violence cases across India

The Maharashtra State Minorities Commission (MSMC), an organisation set up to safeguard the rights of minority groups, has been running without a vice-chairman for seven months now.

Drawing attention to the government’s failure in appointing a new official after the last vice-chairman’s term ended in June 2011, justice (retired) Michael Saldanha said the state has shortlisted candidates for the post. “It is atrocious to keep such a crucial post vacant,” he said.

Saldanha made these observations while releasing a report by the All India Secular Forum and The Catholic-Christian Secular Forum (CSF) on anti-Christian violence in the city on Wednesday. “This is something very serious because the institution is set up by the government under the Constitution to safeguard the rights and privileges of minorities,” he said.

The CSF report says there were at least 1,000 cases of anti-Christian violence across the country in 2011, with a large number of incidents in Karnataka.

Saldanha said while there was a 65%-70% decrease in the number of incidents of atrocities against minorities as a whole between 2008 and 2011, the number increased by 90% during the same period in Karnataka.

Another state that has seen large-scale violence against Christian groups is Orissa.

Referring to the two spates of anti-Christian violence in Orissa in December 2007 and August 2008, Saumya Uma, a consultant in gender and human rights, said,“The National People’s Tribunal report observed that the state did not prevent violence; it ignored destruction of evidence by the perpetrators of violence and dereliction of duty by police officials.”

you cant stand up for your own people in your own country , you want to stand up for us now?

I would like to see someday a Pakistani Hindu or a Christian defending Pakistan of its atrocities on them like Indian Muslims and Christians are doing here. India has moved on from trivial religious fights, it is presently united through common economic and social realities. Nationalism has transcended religious lines. Religion doesn't play a major role in our lives today like it used to do previously. But I concur there are still few dumb people who participate in such heinous acts. But they are immediately criticized by majority and punished.

Now a days, in India we have economic classes like rich, middle, poor and many in between. And these classes include people from many different religions. They all work together to achieve their aspirations. These aspirations have nothing to do with religion but they are to do with providing a better life for our next generations.

India: Christian children especially vulnerable to attacks by Hindus

A new report issued in India noted that 2,141 Christians there suffered aggression, attacks and persecution in 2011, not counting their families, relatives and friends, and indirect victims. It is expected that the persecution by Hindu extremist groups, will grow in 2012. This is the scenario outlined by the new 2011 Report on Persecution in India, published today by the "Catholic-Secular Forum" (CSF), an ecumenical organization founded by Indian Catholics, supported by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay. The Report paints a gloomy picture in which the radical Hindu anti-Christian violence is defined as "a virus that infects society". Persecution in fact "has become more widespread, and covers almost all the states in the country".

A minimum of 1,000 Christian families have been affected by these attacks: the Report denounces "a premeditated campaign" against weak targets and, given the warnings already received, an increase is expected in 2012. The text highlights 250 of the most serious crimes and raises important issues about freedom of faith, abuse of human rights and constitutional rights. According to the CSF, the episodes are only counted as uncovered and reported by the media: if one adds those not registered the total number could triple.

The Report classifies Karnataka as a "rogue state" and places at the top of the list for episodes of persecution. In Karnataka, in southern India, there were over 1,000 attacks on Christians in 2011, "an average of 3-5 attacks per day". Other states mentioned are Orissa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

The main victims are children and women. Children, "unarmed observers of crimes", suffer effects such as deprivation of basic education, malnutrition, life in refugee camps, fear and financial insecurity, abuse and child labor. Also vulnerable women: nuns, sisters, wives or daughters of pastors or community leaders are targeted and undergo rapes and sexual harassment.

Judge Michael F. Saldanha, commenting on the Report, said that "the police, the bureaucracy and the judiciary give the impression that they have abdicated their duty". He asked that the Indian nation and the world to become engaged with the situation of Christians in his country.

According to Professor. Ram Puniyani, a scholar of Hindu extremist groups, "affiliates of Hindutva (the ideology of Hinduism, ed) have now clearly shifted their attention to Christians, especially tribal and Adivasi communities, as they are easy targets, with little fear of retaliation". According to Hindu extremist groups, the Christian missionaries converted by force, fraud and seduction, therefore "are a threat to Hinduism". This theory, said Professor Puniyani, is belied by the facts, since the percentage of Christians in India has declined, they were 2.60% of the population in 1972, 2.44% in 1981, 2.30% in 2001.

The Islamic Supreme Court in Kashmir has incriminated the Catholic missionary Father Jim Borst and the Protestant Pastor Chander Mani Khanna for their alleged involvement in fraudulent activities of proselytizing and conversion to Christianity.

The Islamic court has officially announced that it will publish in the next few days the verdict of the sentence against the accused, with grounds for the decision taken. The court had summoned Pastor Khanna: his statement was recorded and a CD was shown to prove his involvement in the issue of conversions. The pastor was arrested and charged with having converted and baptized 15 young Muslim boys.

According to Mufti Muhammad Nasir-ul-Islam, "during the hearing, Khanna confessed he drew the attention of Muslims to convert them to Christianity" and "was proved beyond doubt that the Pastor has been doing this work for years, along with other accomplices".

Fr. Jim Borst, a Catholic missionary of the Society of St. Joseph of Mill Hill, has been working for almost 50 years for human development of the Kashmiri people. "The accusations against him are false: Many Muslim leaders were formed in schools run by him", notes Catholic Secular Forum. CSF, a nongovernment organization, recalled that Fr. Borst received an expulsion order last year. Christian activists involved with CSF expressed alarm, saying "The situation in Kashmir is at a critical stage for the individual liberties and religious freedom. The Islamic Court has no jurisdiction over Christians. We ask the government to intervene to protect the rights of citizens and to stop these extremist elements".

According to the ecumenical organization "All India Christian Council", which has carried out a mission in Kashmir, Christians suffer severe persecution in Kashmir by Islamic extremist groups in the Muslim majority region of India, Islamists also control politics and the judiciary, eliminating the rule of law. The 400 Christians in the capital Srinagar "are in a state of panic in the uncertainty of their future", says the All India Christian Council, adding that "the police act on behalf of political leadership" - meaning the Muslim majority. The report by the Council denounces the total absence of organizations to protect human rights and the absence of a Commission for Minorities in Kashmir. The Christian presence in the Kashmir valley has been documented since the mid-nineteenth century, with the advent of the first Catholic and Protestant missionaries. Currently there are about 18,000 Catholics, and 15,000 other Christians in Kashmir, out of a total population of 9.4 million. Christians in Kashmir, and elsewhere in India, are also targetted by Hindu nationalists.

Don't think you even understand "SECULARISM" as it is separation of religion from governance. And placing the human first must have been acheived fantastically when you created a caste of Dalits or untouchables. I am not even going to ask you to explain the practice of Sati.
