June 11, 2019. This is only the second day of the week and it already look like this may turn out to be a historic week for Pakistan.

The past 24 hours have seen Mr. Asif Ali Zardari have his bail extension plea rejected by Islamabad High Court. He was then arrested from his home by National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Asif Ali Zardari is the former president of Pakistan and notorious for his corrupt ways of politics. Called Mr. 10% for allegedly asking for a 10% share/bribe in all his dealings, this was when his wife, Benzair Bhutto was alive and Prime Minister and Asif Ali Zardari was given a unimportant ministry in her cabinet. He later on became the President of Pakistan in 2008 after his wife was killed and since then the stories of his corruption and crime keep on surfacing slowly. His henchman, SSP Rao Anwar was allegedly involved in murder of a pakhtoon youth, Naqeebullah Mehsud. An even that was used by the anti-state elements to incite ethnic violence in Pakistan by forming up Pakhtoon Tahafuz Movement (PTM). Asif Ali Zardari along with his sister Faryal Talpur both have a case of fake bank accounts against them in which they had both taken pre-arrest bail.

A request to extend the bail was rejected by court and the co-chairperson of PPP have been arrested.

When Imran Khan, now the Prime Minister of Pakistan talked about across the board accountability in his election campaign in 2018 it was ridiculed by some as impracticable and loved and cherished by others as the news and commitment they have always wanted to hear, have heard a lot but still were willing to believe that this time, it is all for real. Today these both sides can at least see that Imran Khan is closer than ever to deliver on this promise. Once in power, judiciary and NAB was given free hand to investigate and prosecute all corrupt leaders. First time in Pakistan's history we have seen MNAs and MPAs of the ruling party resign and disqualified/arrested over corruption charges.

The news of arrest of Asif Ali Zardari was just next chapter in this war against corruption and was looking as a promising one and then it started to get better. This news was then followed up with another major one. That of arrest of opposition leader Hamza Shehbaz Sharif. Hamza Shehbaz is son of three time Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr. Shehbaz Shairf. Hamza was facing arrest in Ramzan Sugar Mills case and Assets Beyond Means case. His request for pre-arrest bail was rejected by Justice Mazhir Ali Naqvi of Lahore High Court. After that he was arrested by NAB.

It is worth mentioning that Shehbaz Sharif himself is on bail in three NAB cases against him, namely Ashiana Iqbal corruption case, Saaf Pani Company scam and Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption cases.

As if two in two days were not enough, a news came from a very unexpected and unlikely front today. A news that almost every single Pakistan have wanted to hear for ages!! Altaf Hussain, the founder of MQM known for his role in ethnic violence, murder, extortion, kidnappings, politically motivated target killings and all sorts of crimes, a fugitive in London was arrested by UK's Scotland yard today. He was arrested in a case regarding his hate speech against Pakistan. Every single Pakistani will be praying that he is transferred to Pakistan now where he faces trial and is sentenced according to the state's law.

Not to mention that the arrest of these three MAJOR thugs of Pakistan is accompanied with action against other anti-state elements. Elements and agents of chaos not as notorious as Nawaz Sharif, Altaf Hussain or Zardari but on track to become similar kind of problem if not bigger. Gulalai Ismail was arrested from Peshawar yesterday. Using any incident to bad mouth Pakistan and its intuitions, specially army, she was last seen using the rape of a poor underage girl Farishat to blame and bash army even though the two were not remotely related. She have been an active spokes person of the above mentioned PTM.

Her arrest comes after two other prominent leaders of this organization, Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir were arrested for inciting violence and their role in attack on an Army Check post last month.

With this across board operation against corrupt and anti-state elements, Imran Khan seem to be nearing his promise of accountability for all and the nation is given a new hope.

And most importantly, let us not forget that the Armed Forces have also sentenced three senior officers (two death penalties, one 14 years in prison).

Across the board accountability includes every section and party be it in opposition or government...Its good at-least somehow it started ...but still it will not be considered as across the board or too early to say

The dawn of a new era for Pakistan?
Wont call these events dawn of a new era but it is a big news if the systems is finally been pushed back on track. We need institution that can keep on operating irrespective of the ruling party and just keep doing their job. I understand that there are some who will be calling these arrests as oppression but come on, who are we kidding? don't we know the truth about Zardari or Sharif and this new PTM thugs? So the events of past two days in my opinion is the state finally standing up to the challenges. That is great. Completely support this.

@VCheng technically this "new era" should be the day PTI won the elections, as now they have the required authority to take decisions pertaining to domestic as well as the foreign policy of Pakistan.

As I said above, let us see what effect these steps have eventually, if any.

Oh yes!!

You see my other post in Hamza Shehbaz arrest thread, i also said similar thing. However that do not and should not undermine the important of the state at least trying to address all such problems head on rather than looking for politically motivated excuses to look the other way.

At least it is started on the right note. We have seen the government firing their own ministers for hate speech, MNA and MPA of running party being disqualified/arrested over corruption charges. Senior army officers punished. Corrupt leaders of different parties either arrested or on bail! If they can keep the system on this track things will start to improve.
