Accepting the gift from Taiwan, the Chinese telephone to Dhaka expressing 'dismay'

China has telephoned Bangladesh's foreign ministry to express its sorrow over receiving a gift from Taiwan in response to the coronavirus epidemic.
An official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Chinese embassy had verbally conveyed the message to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh has informed China that Bangladesh believes in one China policy. There is no question of separate formal communication with Taiwan.
The foreign ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "We have received a telephone call from the Chinese embassy informing them of their distress. They wanted to know about the whole thing. We have assured them that Bangladesh believes in the one-China policy and that attitude has not changed. "
He said that after talking to the ministers who took part in the event, they came to know that they had gone to a private organization. The Chinese embassy was also informed, the official said.
Which happened
Taiwan provided a number of medical supplies through an event in Dhaka on 31 August. Three Ministers and three Secretaries of the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Commerce and Posts and Telecommunications of Bangladesh were present on the occasion.
An organization called Taiwan External Trade Development Council handed over one lakh surgical masks, 1600 N-95 masks, 20,000 cloth masks, 10,000 face shields, PPE, goggles, two sets of ventilators to the Ministry of Health.
This Taiwanese semi-government non-profit organization works to expand Taiwan's business in various countries.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, one of the three ministers present at the event, said, "We did not know that gifts were being taken from Taiwan. We were told Walton would give some gift items to the Ministry of Health. It was organized by the Ministry of Health.
"We went there and heard that they had been sent from Taiwan. We didn't even know it, we didn't know it had anything to do with Taiwan. "
What is the impact on Bangladesh-China?
Munshi Fayez Ahmed has served as Bangladesh's ambassador to China. He says a special condition for maintaining relations with China is to believe in the one-China policy. With the exception of that, China is not happy about it. When Bangladesh and most of the countries of the world talk about 'One China' policy, they abide by it.
He said many powerful countries may be exceptions, but they do not hesitate to point out that China is not happy there either.
"China does not bar any country from doing business with Taiwan, it is not their policy. But they want to keep in mind that Taiwan is not a separate state. No such relationship should be built.
Citing the example of the gift-giving ceremony, he said three ministers had gone, which might not be to China's liking. That is normal.
"It simply came to our notice then. Maybe there is a chance of a misunderstanding. However, I think there is no problem on the part of the government in this regard. Because this government has no idea about giving special importance to Taiwan. But you may not have a clear idea of where the boundaries are. "
"We may be able to do something that is not right in their eyes. So we need to be more vigilant about these in the future, ”he said. Source: BBC

slowly but surely indian stooge awami regime in "Bangladesh" destroying relation with China. Taiwan and One China policy is very core of Chinese policy stand. Mocking Chinese core belief by 3 regime minister can not happen without approval from regime PM Hasina herself.

.
We should not put our eggs in one basket. China did not care when we faced existential crisis with the rohingya and they need to get over this.
Neither china nor india nor the west are out friends. We should balance and follow our own way. We need not be beholden to anyone elses priority.

That may be true but what does Bangladesh gain by accepting such gifts from Taiwan?

There is obviously a cost in terms of relationship with China. So what benefit is there to offset that cost? Genuine question.

Hasina should take foreign policy advice from your rajakar abba bahadur

.
Taiwan is China's internal affair, recognizing this Western proxy is an insult to China.

Hasina needs to stop playing games. It will hurt BD interests, as they will be left at the mercy of Indians

Should have simply thanked the Chinese embassy for the gifts during the same phone convo. Problem solved. :D

You make a good point. What is the benefit? Afterall the gift from Taiwan was small.

I think we should send out timely reminder to countries like china that BD is independent. Let us look at BD china relationship...it overwhelmingly beneficial to china. Are they really going to gepordise a 10 billion dollar market over such a minor issue. I think not.

Such actions also signals to the west that BD is not in Chinese orbit.

Every action should be undertaken after consideration absolutely. My personal opinion is we should not cow tow to other countries priorities....Bangladesh first..... if US is to go head to head against china, BD needs to ensure strategic distance.

This is the wrong mindset to have, in my opinion.

Each relationship is based on give and take.

Why antagonize China on little, useless Taiwan? Not much benefit can be gained for BD. If you think it will please West, wrong again. You know they will never acceot BD due to Islamic faith, instead they will seek to strengthen Burma and India.

For long time also, BD made statements in support of India in Kashmir and against Pakistan. Did this stop India from taking anti-BD actions? All it did was sour Pakistan for absolutely no benefit for BD.

I remember that Hasina even said she will send BD troops to Afghanistan for India. No doubt this move was to irritate Pakistan. When strong response came from Taliban, BD did not end up sending anything (alhamdulilah.)

You have to pick a side and stick to it. It is not advantageous to play both against each other. States who play this strategy end up getting worst from both sides.

Your position is a logical one.
However again my personal opinion BD should follow its own policy. We can not trust any one else but our selves and do not have any friends. China is not a friend as proven by the rohingya debacle.

China is a economic partner, it is not a strategic one. The relationship is one sided and BD should use it to our advantage as necessary. What is china going to do not sell us stuff? We will simply buy it from elsewhere. I see no reason not to have an economic relationship with taiwan. Sod one china policy.... what really does that bollocks have anything to do with us. Taiwanese travel to china, invest in china and vice versa.... utter bs that BD should not.

I do not ever recall BD ever saying we will send troops to afganistan or supporting indian position in Kashmir. BD have kept silent or have said UN resolution should be basis of negotiations.

Most People wants to be friends with those who have money. We should always remember this fact that’s taught from childhood.

Hasina's anti-Pakistanism knows no limits, alhamdulillah I feel sensible minds are in BD now keeping her in check.

In late 2010, the worst days of Indian-funded insurgency and bomb blasts in our country, India tried to push its allies forward to support its presence in Afghanistan, and US sent that request to BD. Alhamdulilah it was rejected by BD after Taliban warning. I believe as recently as the last few years, it was flirted with again, but earned a strong Pakistani response.

We have been used BD connivance with India on Kashmir for quite some time. To illustrate some recent examples. Last year BD supported India in scrapping Article 379 which scrapped Kashmir's special status as an autonomous region saying it is India's internal matter. This year, Imran Khan brought up Kashmir with Hasina in a telephone conversation where she completely ignored the issue.

Expected to have depth in your thinking, perhaps that is too much to ask. This is not about Myanmar issue, regime and "Bangladesh" continued relation China as usual. After all these years saying oh "We should not put our eggs in one basket", for one, does not mitigate shortcomings in Rohinga issue. And going against Chinese core sentiment of one China is actually not an act of "not putting all eggs in one basket" but acting against China and its core interest. Perhaps, you need to fathom that before making so loose statement.

Was rohingya issue not a critical issue for BD. What was chinas reaction? They are fair weather friends, we do not need to pay too much heed to their needs. Against india china will not help, we are just a market for them.
Our alignment should be with the west as our economy is dependent on them.
Everything will carry on as normal... nothing will change.

BD is never going to fight for india over Kashmir or afganistan or anywhere else. It is simply inconceivable and will lead to immediate regime change as it will not have any support from the people.
Hasina is not really anti Pakistan..... its just politics and gets her money from india....
