That would be contradictory to any resurgent Japanese administrations , however. Ultimately, Japan's long term goal is to normalize relations with Russia.
What the United States is finding out now -- and will be exacerbated further in the future is that Japan will not necessarily play fiddle with Washington.
I guess deeper engagement in the Asian theater does not really devoid the US of much required resources. The US already has its historically sound Euro-Atlantic alliance and that is effectively the front it engages Russia. With Japan getting normalized or not, the Russian theater will remain to be based on the Atlantic alliance.
I believe Japan's normalization will be good news for Russia because Japan would not have made some uncalled for mistakes with respect to sanctions on Russia had it had a really independent foreign policy. Hence, a resurgent Japan will choose to engage Russia constructively because what Russia does in the European theater is the least of Japan's concern (in fact, it should be secretly happy because commodity prices have fallen down, a major import item for Japan which is, in terms of percentage, more dependent on foreign sources than China).
