Where are Indians going? Bottom left of the data, Passenger coverage, where are all these people going? China has more rails, that means India must have way more passengers.

Why do Indians travel more than Chinese and what's with this traveling?

The trains are the way to travel in India, tickets are cheap, so people travel more in train compared to taking flight which is a bit costly for a large part of the population. And since the construction of larger freeways had just begun in the past decade. So traveling by road is a bit limited crrently.

I guess most of the population in China is living on eastern side so there is not much need of travelling. And in India the story is different. People are living everywhere

Indian railways is the work horse of Indian population. I don;t know how many festivals you got in China but in India we have many.

Plus as India is relatively poorer than China so not many can afford Flights.

Number will only add up as more tracks are being laid and new plans to attach North east to mainland.

India needs faster and efficient trains. I believe Indian railways should be privatized at least 30% , this will increase quality and expansion. Sooner or later we will catch up with China in Railways

Itz not a cultural thing.Our politicians have no vision,accountability.
If the same scams were to happen in China Thousands would be in jail or executes.
Our economy is 50% black and it ends up in swiss banks.
Recently swiss are giving money to all itz citizens itz all our money .It goes to swiss they buy US bonds and enjoy the returns.

IF you club India and swiss then we will be a real power.

It is a cheaper and safer option than travelling in your own vehicle or travelling by a bus. So, people tend to use Railways whenever possible.

You can add 50% more trains overnight and still it will not be able to demand. That's the kind of trust Indians have in their railways.

India is a small country so less rail network will give you more passenger coverage.We have a good rail network coverage in highly populated states like U.P. so it gives us more passenger coverage.
Also Indian railways are dirt cheap and India is also a poor country so people prefer Railways over anything else.Many times you could get travel freeely

For Majority of Indians Trains are the only options for long or mid distance travel. Air Fare is too high for most of the Indian travelers.

The China picture is not even a Chinese HST, it's actually a Japanese HST at a Japanese station.

BTW, I keep reading about the new land acquisition law, is it gonna further affect the feasibility of HSR in India?

Our Railway fares are damn cheap and thats why services and trains are poor quality. Indian trains should start charge the exact charge it costs a passenger.

Agreed, I never seen such HSR in China

India can build the HSR like China can only if it can acquire the land it needs to build the rails. BUT being a democratic country, it will be difficult.

Instead of having only cheaper fares and low quality service.

Indian railway should have some extent of high fare trains with good quality like we have shatabdhi and doronto trains...which will increase in coming years.

I was told the chinese cannot travel and settle anywhere in china but need permission to do so. Is that true ? What are the laws regarding that in china ?

India can build the HSR like China can only if it can acquire the land it needs to build the rails. BUT being a democratic country, it will be difficult.

Chinese HSR are build at giant pace to achieve high GDP growth targets instead of making profit.

I can see, British media didn't tell you the crappy condition in which they left the Indian railways and how our government improved it. They want to take all credits for the modern Indian railways.
