A question on Indian rails, where are you going?

Dragon versus sloth bear: Can a new rail budget help India's trains catch high-speed China? | Mail Online

The article isn't important, not here to talk about Indian Chinese rails.

Where are Indians going? Bottom left of the data, Passenger coverage, where are all these people going? China has more rails, that means India must have way more passengers.

Why do Indians travel more than Chinese and what's with this traveling?

Is it a culture thing?

More than 70% of domestic tourism in India is from travel based on socio-religious activities. This could be wedding, birth etc etc. This is based on some study had read, when was working on a project related to tourism.

Out of the internal tourist traffic, I would estimate that more than 50% of the traffic would be Gujaratis, Bengalis and Maharashtrians. This is from some report had read.

As for freight, there are 2 main corridors. The eastern corridor and western corridor.

Hope this clarifies?

Tourism within the country is a big thing in India, India is a beautiful country with very diverse and naturally beautiful places and many historical places, most people, whether rich or poor, generally go for a long distance travel at least once a year, either for tourism or for pilgrimage+tourism. We also travel a lot within the country for education, job, medical treatment, etc. And the preferred mode for all the travelling is trains, they are cheap & reliable mode of travelling.

And our railways run on socialist principals, :-) they are simple but very very affordable, in last 5-6 decades the total growth in length of the railways didn't grow exponentially, but lots of work like conversion to broad gauge line, electrification of the lines, conversion of single lines to double lines or more, etc. have happened.
