A glimpse of true Islamic spirit in corruption-ridden society
Despite a *** race to accumulate wealth and corruption becoming a way of life to fill the coffers, there are exceptions; unlike hundreds of parasites eating into the vitals of the nation, a well-to-do member of the society is offering free meals to the poor.
The secretary, Food Department, Punjab Irfan Elahi himself visited a free-meal restaurant to check the standard of food served there.
For a second opinion he took along Secretary Industries, Dr Shujaat Ali. It was in a state of disbelief to find poor people sitting respectably an air-conditioned restaurant and making the best of a free meal. The outlet is being run in the name of Bahria Dastarkhwan at Abbot Road, Lahore.
He saw almost all the tables occupied by mostly workers wearing shabby clothes, young and old, eating to their fill together, irrespective of class or color, to one-dish of Aloo-gosht curry served with chappatis hot from the Tandoor in as much quantity as they could eat.
Impressed by the standard of the food, he couldnt help appreciating it. The taste of the dish is as good as in any good restaurant selling such a meal at a cost of Rs 100 in many of the outlets of the city. In fact, the taste is better than others, endorsed Dr Shujat.
Talking to the News, he said Punjab government will provide subsidized flour to any outlets in the province genuinely offering free meals or subsidized meals, say at a cost of Rs 10 or Rs 15. Such a philanthropy was once the pride of Islamic society, Irfan said. Dr Shujat added that the traditional rural society, which he hails from, did cater to the such basic needs once upon a time.
The rich should help the poor in eating at least two square meals a day, he said.
The administrator of Bahria Dartarkhan restaurant apprised the secretary, food department that about 2500 to 3000 people daily eat food for free from this venue. Bahria Dastarkhwan runs such restaurants in Karachi, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala also.
