A clear message, agenda on own terms: Why PM Modi met Nawaz Sharif

The greatest foreign policy difference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his predecessor Manmohan Singh has been Pakistan. Singh believed in dialogue with Pakistan at almost any cost. Modi’s views were more akin to those of ex-PM PV Narasimha Rao: Dealing with Pakistan was high risk, low return and not worth the investment.

However, official sources say, Modi recognised he could not take a hardline stance on Pakistan without lines of communication to Islamabad — this would let Pakistan talk up the “nuclear flashpoint” claim and encourage international pressure to build up.

But India wanted to bury the 26/11 tainted composite dialogue and make the agenda about terror. So Modi began to embed all official meetings with Pakistan within the Saarc. His endless neighbourhood tours, overtures to China, and back-to-back summits with Barack Obama also drove home to Pakistan its global pariah status.

India’s message to Pakistan was not that we won’t talk, but that any conversation would be about tangibles regarding terror. New Delhi would not be diverted: India was the global power-in-the-making, Pakistan the failing state. “We expected a long impasse,” said a source. “The question was who would crack?”

The answer is now clear: Pakistan.

The joint statement is noticeable for its lack of an explicit mention of Kashmir and that three-quarters of its text is terror related. It replaces the composite dialogue with a new line-up of bilateral meetings. And it sets tests for Pakistan like 26/11-related voice samples.

India accepts the Pakistani leader Nawaz Sharif went the extra mile at the meeting and at some political cost at home.

It was evident for several months that Pakistan’s “confidence levels had been falling.” To some degree, this had reached dangerous levels. The US and other foreign governments had warned India that the combination of harsh language by Modi’s ministers, the LoC exchanges and the Myanmar raid had jacked up Pakistan’s neurotic fears of an Indian threat. Intelligence showed that the Pakistan military had been expanding its engagement with militant groups – a possible precursor to a terrorist strike.

Even a symbolic gesture to Islamabad, the case was made to New Delhi, would help reduce the rising paranoia in Rawalpindi.

Modi got what he wanted: An agenda on his terms. Pakistan, the world got what they wanted: Talks, of whatever kind.

Lol. Total domestic consumption. Indians like having their anus tickled.

Even before Modi played the "rusi vi bhao" Pakistan approached India with prospects of peace and mutual collaboration. This was directly after the Modi's coronation as India's greatest messiah. Almost 2 years on, it's still the same.

India achieved nothing. Kashmir is still in dispute, firings still on the LOC (heck Pakistanis using snipers now, lol), alleged terror camps still in full swing in Pakistan (allegedly), Pakistan still the nuisance-pariah-failed-state which India can't bear (albeit with better ties to Russia and a brighter future outlook than it has had in a long time)...

If anything's changed it's Pakistan's almost daily disclosures to the world of subversive activities being perpetrated by R&AW this side of the border, and the dunce cap which the Indian ministers have put on with statements like the one in my signature.

Diplomatically, as with all other things, India only got poorer among the comity of nations. If anything suffered, it wasn't Pakistan, but the prospect of enduring peace in this region. Peace, will always be a fleeting notion, however, because China, Pakistan and Bangladesh border what is inherently a hostile and terrorist state.

Corroborate all facts, but who gives a damn about facts. People win war on PDF just by typing.

Sharif took the bait. He is a complete idiot. He should have forced his argument but he is seriously lacking in one skill needed for this job - leadership.

Hahah.:omghaha:

Kashmir has you lot so spooked that apparently no mention of it is considered a victory and has all of India mentally masturbating on def.pk. Kashmir's being taken up at the upcoming UN summit (as are India's violations of its Resolutions). Lol. This is too good to be true.

Please talk sense, If you continue to sprout such non sense atleast have the decency to back it up with proof.

I would accept any statement from Bangladesh and your dearest iron brother China accusing India of terrorism in fact your iron brother appreciates India and China are both victim of terrorism. As for Pakistan I have multiple statements from Afganishtan and Iran accusing Pakistan of terrorism. That's three out of your four neighbours accusing Pakistan of terrorism while you can't provide a single statement from even China accusing India of terrorism.

The way you guys are trying to equate Pakistan state sponsored terrorism with India is comical and childish without any proof except the rantings of demented mind.

Pakistan and India have been told that they can become members of SCO only if they meet and have a joint statement about their meeting. India took this opportunity gladly to make Pakistan come to terms on India's demand. Rumors are, even China wanted Pakistan to act against Lakhvi as it does not want to be seen in bad light Internationally after it used VETO power to rescue Pakistan from UN sanctions. China and Russia mediated the meeting. Russia is as usual has a pro India approach. Therefore the agenda was all Indian
Nawaz is not the responsible but People who shield Lakhvis of Pakistan are in fact the real culprits

Any source regarding China statement?

China will always say something nice things but their actions tell us something else.

Piece of advice regarding China - Close your ears and open your eyes. Their actions speak louder than words
