A New Karnafuli Bridge to be Opened on 7th
Monday, 30 August 2010
Author / Source : NURUL AMIN, CHITTAGONG

Aug 29: The Karnaphuli third bridge on the River Karnaphuli connecting the Southern Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and the hill district Banderban will be opened for vehicular traffic formally on September 7next. Talking to the Independent, the project manager said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate the bridge.
The construction of the bridge had started in July in 2006. The reputed Chinese Construction Company "Major Bridge Construction, China" had constructed the bridge.

The 980-meter long new bridge includes five pillars with two hundred-meter space. The sources said, the project involves a cost of Taka 566 crore including a foreign exchange component of Taka 372 crore providing by the Kuwait Fund.

Some 70 lakh inhabitants of the Southern part of Chittagong, Cox's Bazaar and Banderban districts will be benefited with the bridge. The opening of the new bridge is expected to contribute to the development of the port city, Chittagong, creating an opportunity to expand the city to the South Bank of the river Karnaphuli.

The existing one-kilometre-long Shah Amanat Bridge on the River Karnaphuli constructed in 1989 with the old parts of an abandoned bridge by the Netherlands at a cost of Taka 500 crores is very dangerous since its inception. For this reason, the Roads and Highways Department has declared the Shah Amanat Bridge over the River Karnaphuli partially dangerous due to damage to the wooden components of the bridge. So the movement of heavy vehicles, such as bus and trucks through the bridge has been suspended since 2003 last.

Some 50,000 vehicles including bus, microbus, pick-up, jeep, car and auto-rickshaws of 18 different routes are regularly plying through the dilapidated Shah Amanat Bridge and the Kalurghat Railway Bridge.
Meanwhile, the Railway authority had declared the Kalurghat Railway Bridge unfit for vehicular traffic. But the movement of the vehicles has been continuing although in restricted forms, after making some necessary repairs.

The Roads and Highway Department (RHD) gave the work order to the Construction Company "Major Bridge Construction, China" for constructing a new bridge on the river Karnaphuli in 2006 last.
Meanwhile the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) had conducted a survey of the River Karnaphuli by an expert team of BUET that revealed that the reason for siltation of the Karnaphuli river was the construction of Shah Amanat Bridge in the upstream of the Chittagong Port.

If another concrete bridge is constructed on the Karnaphuli, the navigational channel of the Chittagong Port will be seriously affected, the survey report said.

In this connection, CPA had conducted several surveys in the said area that depicted a danger signal for the navigational channel of the port. The survey found that the silt in the upstream would certainly hamper the operational activities of the Chittagong Port severely. So it has now become inevitable for the CPA to maintain a continuous dredging of the areas to keep the port navigable. Otherwise, the experts opined, the main installations of the port would be affected badly.

I still remember first 2 lane Meghna bridge in Daudkandi costing 100 crore financed by Japan during Ershad regime. It was really a trying time for BD.
I heard they will rebuild it now.. :D

If the Daudkandi bridge was built by Japan, then it is possible that Japan will finance the new or substitute one, too. Because, it is a matter of pride for Japan. They will not like any other country to rebuild it. It will be seen as a disgrace by the govt of Japan. BD govt should request Japan to finance and rebuild it without going through a bidding process.

The news below is a little older. But, I am posting it because the link shows a picture of Karnaphuli bridge under construction.

Metropolitan3rd Karnaphuli bridge opens to traffic Sept 8

Abdullah Al MahmudAt last the much-awaited 3rd Karnaphuli bridge opens to traffic to connect Cox's Bazar, Bandarban and southern upazilas of Chittagong for boosting up economic activities in the areas.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to open the 950-metre long and 24.47-metre wide bridge at 11:00am on September 8.

Construction of the bridge started in August 2006 under a project involving Tk 590 crore.

With the financial assistance of Tk 372 crore provided by Kuwait Fund as soft loan was scheduled to be completed in September, 2009.

The bridge could be constructed at Tk 380 crore saving Tk 210 crore of the estimated budget, sources said.

The rest of the amount (Tk 210 crore) would be used in expanding the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway starting from other end (Patiya end) of the bridge, said Project Director (PD) Bidhan Chandra Dharr, also a superintendent engineer of Roads and Highway Department (RHD), Chittagong circle.

Alongside four lanes for vehicles, the bridge has two 1.5-m lanes for movement of 'manual transports' like rickshaws, push carts and vans. There is also a 1.5-m walkway on each side of the bridge, said the project director.

The bridge has a 0.5 km approach road in the city end and one km approach road at the Patiya end, he said.

There is a toll plaza with six money counters---three each for Cox's Bazar-bound and Chittagong-bound vehicles at Patiya end of the bridge, he said.

The 3rd bridge on the river Karnaphuli was a long felt demand since the century-old Kalurghat rail-road bridge and renovated Shah Amanat Bridge could hardly cope with the flow of vehicular traffic to maintain road communications with the South Chittagong division.

Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia laid the foundation stone of the bridge on April 19, 2004.

The bridge will not cause any significant change in the morphology or siltation of the river. Removal of the existing 2nd bridge now (after completion of the 3rd bridge) would reduce the rate of siltation at Karnaphuli channel, sources said.

This good news, proper connection between different areas of a country help in the pursuit of a prosperous economy and reduced traffic.

Btw, what do you guys think of starting a thread called "News and updates about Bangladesh infrastructure development"? Like how bd_4_ever started one about education. That would help remove some clutter in the thread area.

That should be a good idea....as lots more news and updates regarding infrastructure development is likely to come in years time....

I request someone to open such a thread....MODS can then be requested to merge it with the related separate threads....

Cheers!!!
