Mr. Xi has had some hard teaching on Obama.
Mr. Obama needs to assure China of his commitments to not challenging China on its home turf and acknowledge that China is not the same country a decade back.
Mr. Obama also needs to assure Mr. Xi that he will carry out the required reforms to ensure that the unsustainable economic policies of the US that is based on excessive money printing and borrowing is to be corrected.
On spying, China has just indicted a US citizen for spying in China (held in custody for 6 months now). This must have put some pressure on Obama, who was in fact hoping to bring some heat on China. It seems that Mr. Xi strongly urged Mr. Obama to streamline his words with his deeds.
On Syria, as well, Mr. Xi must have relayed the China-Russia common proposal, which is in direct violation of Obama's oft-breached red lines in Syria. Hence, recently, Washington started to voice a solution with President Assad as a legitimate party.
On the other hand, China is offering the US lots and lots of business opportunities and privileges in China's most sought-after market.
It is understandable that Mr. Obama is tense. Because it is the New Normal within the framework of the new form of major power relationship.
This meeting is a breaking point. Relations are getting more and more equal and warm.
