72.5% of Taiwanese willing to fight against Chinese invasion
75.3% believe democracy is best system for their country
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A survey released on Wednesday (Dec. 29) found that over 70% of Taiwanese are prepared to defend Taiwan if China tries to annex the country by force.

In the annual Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFC) poll, over 70% of respondents said they were willing to fight to defend Taiwan against an invasion by China. In addition, over 75% agree democracy is still the best political system for governing Taiwan.

At a press conference that day, foundation president Huang Yu-lin (黃玉霖) said the results of the survey confirm that people, regardless of party affiliation, are willing to fight for the country as long as they have faith in Taiwan's democratic system. In addition, Huang said that the younger the age group, the more willing Taiwanese were to defend their country.

Respondents were given two scenarios: Taiwan declares independence, prompting China to invade, and China invades to achieve unification.

In the event that China used force to unify with Taiwan, 72.5% were willing to defend their nation. Of this group, 37.8% were very willing and 34.7% were willing. Meanwhile, 8.4% of respondents were unwilling and 10.2% very unwilling, while 9% gave no response.

If Taiwan declared independence and China invaded in response, Taiwanese were 10% less willing to protect their country, with 31.9% very willing, 30.8% willing, 11.3% unwilling, 15.4% very unwilling, and 10.6% made no selection.

When presented with the statement "Democracy may have problems, but it is still the best system," 75.3% agreed, with 27.8% strongly agreeing and 47.5% agreeing. Of the remainder, 10.9% strongly disagreed, 3.2% completely disagreed, and 10.5% provided no response.

The Election Study Center at National Chengchi University conducted the survey on behalf of the TFD and interviewed adults aged 20 and over who were born in Taiwan. There were 874 valid samples collected from landlines and 425 from mobile phones, with a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of 2.72 percentage points.

That's funny. When I was in high school, the biggest chickenshits with the loudest mouths were from Taiwan. They don't actually fight unless they have 5 to 1 advantage. That was nearly 20 years ago when they were less of a pussified society than today.

I will believe it when I see it.

Oooo please... I know a couple of Taiwanese, the moment PRC declares war, the bulk will run and migrate. They like to talk big but when the Red Army marches in..... They will literally surrender

If taiwanese are really so keen on fighting PLA, they wouldn't scrapped the conscription. They will be like Israel.

This kind of fake data and news are to fool ignorant mass who didn't know the ground reality of Taiwan ROC.

These are called targeted polls. Another one done just days earlier has drastically different result.

51.3% is still too high. I believe only less than 30% are willing to pick up arms if PLA invaded. Many Taiwanese I have chat with know PLA now are too strong for them. Just look at the military budget different and you can know the gap.

Majority of that 30% will run home once missiles start raining down from the sky. I'm not even sure if Taiwan will actually put up any mass organized resistance anything bigger than battalion level.

The question was never whether China could take Taiwan. It's always been whether China can resist the counterstrike from US and the resulting economic and political repercussions.

Taiwanese better fight as US is not going to defend them.

Taiwanese fate is going to be similar to Hong Kong.

. .
You mean their fate is to be occupied by a facist terror regime?

Who cares about propaganda. Hard power wins. Always.

Taiwan was never a Chinese territory to start with.

Formosa was a Spanish and Dutch colony in the 1600s.

There were hardly any Chinese on the Island when Europeans showed up.

Formosa was then inhabited by the Austronesian native tribes only.

The island later fell to Colonial Japan which was later forced to give up as part of WWII deal.

ROC Chinese fled China and illegally occupied Formosa.

Now Chinese PRC is going take it and no one will stop it.

Why Dutch left Taiwan then?
