LAHORE, Dec 1: President of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Prof Syed Sibit Ul Hasnain on Saturday disclosed that 70 percent of the female students did not practice medicine after becoming doctor and completing their studies. Speaking as chief guest at a “White Coat Day ” ceremony of Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Medical and Dental College here, he said that according to PMDC data, the remaining 30 per cent joined the medical profession and only 10 percent pursued higher studies.
He called upon the parents and in-laws of lady doctors, in the larger national interest and for the welfare of society, to allow their daughters and daughters-in-law to practice or join the medical profession because the nation spent billions of rupees on their education. He said that the PMDC had liberalised its decades-old policy on merit to promote quality medical education in the country with public-private sector partnership. He said that 76 medical and dental colleges were registered in the country in 2007 which as a result of prudent polices of PMDC, have now swelled to 125 with an addition of 25,000 new beds.
Prof Syed Sibit Ul Hasnain said that PMDC had computerised faculties of all medical and dental colleges and both self-financed Agha Khan Medical College and Shakih Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan were adjudged the best medical institutions in the country equipped with the latest
medical gadgets and excellent faculties. About academic achievements of the newly admitted
first year medical students, he said, “They are the best of the best because only 90 students got admission on merit out of a total of 3500 applicants.” He called upon the new students to inculcate the sprit of “the best of the best human being” as well if they wanted to earn good repute in future
in the medical profession. He said the patient-doctor rate in Pakistan was very low compared to other underdeveloped countries across the globe and the country needed at least 6,500 new
doctors every year.
Former SZH Chairman and Dean Prof Dr Anwaar A Khan, Dr Zafar Iqbal Chauhdary, Prof Ayyaz Ali Khan, Prof Saluat, Prof Ajmal Hussain Naqvi, Prof Muhammad Usman Khan and other senior faculty members were also present. Earlier, Principal, Chairman and Dean SZH Prof Zafaq Iqbal
in his welcome address advised the students to pursue quality eduction and learn from their high-profile teaching faculty. He said that new students were lucky to have obtained admission to the college on merit which he claimed was the best in the country in terms of education and practical under one roof.

I know a lady Gynecologist by profession whose husband is also senior surgeon, but she (like wives of her husband's colleagues) does NOT practice her profession, but every weekend they organize free medical camps and offer free check-up/consultancy and subsidized-medicines. This is good mindset actually, and a positive approach toward those who cannot afford good professional doctors.
