RAWALPINDI:
A seven-year-old religious seminary student lost sight in one of his eyes due to alleged torture by a cleric in the Kallar Sathwani area within the limits of Kallar Syedan Police station. The police registered a case on the complaint of the victim’s father and arrested the cleric. According to sources, Shafqat Hussain informed the police that his sevenyear-old son, Muhammad Ali, used to take tuition for the Holy Quran from cleric Hafiz Muhammad Ali in a nearby mosque.

On July 23, when the child went to study as usual, Hafiz Muhammad Ali allegedly tortured the child for not memorising his lesson. During the episode, the teacher threw the child on the ground where pieces of broken glass were scattered. As a result, a shard of the broken glass hit the victim in his right eye which started to bleed. On receiving intimation, the child was taken to a hospital in Kallar Syedan. Later, the victim was referred to the Holy Family Hospital, where his eye was operated upon. Subsequently, the doctors informed the family that the child had sustained substantial damage to his eye and as a result, he lost sight in the right eye.

Hitting students as punishment should be outlawed in all countries. Also, destroying people's homes in India as punitive punishment should be outlawed. Nobody outside cares about Indian lives, so it hasn't been raised as a serious issue outside although it counts as a crime against humanity.

An eye of an eye.

This is a vicious cycle of abuse where strict punishments are a cultural norm but why do these punishments must entail physical and mental abuse? Do these people dish out abuse because that's all they know?

India is communal so it practices communal punishments.

What can you expect from mullahs, typically?

It depends on the reason. Hitting a child for a mistake is harassment. Hitting should be used to punish bad behavior.

Destroying homes in India as punishment is communal, malicious, and barbaric.

In the American School Kuwait, to my surprise teachers and students were like friends there. In the Indian School, hitting students with a ruler or getting slapped by teachers was normal, and we had to stand up when answering a question. I did that in the American school and the whole class burst out laughing and the teacher too. Critical thinking and projects were emphasized, not a bunch of information to be memorized.

Eye for an eye then...

I think it is okay if a teacher hits a student to protect himself or other students from physical harm. There was a male teacher, Mr. Peterson, who was trying to come out of the class and an a-hole student was pushing or pulling against the door not letting him out. The teacher literally kicked him in the butt when he came out which made me happy.

Aren't you a sadist High Priest? A free pass to abuse anyone for your definition of 'correct' behaviour.

If a kid cussed at you or spat at your, what would you do as a teacher? Turn the other cheeck.

These things are unique to India and some parts of Africa
