7 Things You Shouldn’t Do On an Empty Stomach
What you do before eating or drinking anything also has a huge impact on our health. Many of us have a habit to get things done before filling our bellies, however, there are a couple of things that are advised to not do on an empty stomach as they can lead to undesirable consequences.
Check out these 8 things that you shouldn’t do any empty stomach at any cost:
#1 Drink Tea or Coffee
It seems tempting to make yourself a warm cup of tea or coffee in the morning when we are all in a rush for a dose of caffeine. However, drinking tea or coffee on an empty stomach can lead to an increase in the acidic levels in the stomach. This may cause dehydration, an uncomfortable sensation in the stomach, and putting you at the risk of stomach problems like constipation or vomiting.
#2 Work Out
People often work out on an empty stomach thinking it will aid in weight loss, however, our body needs food to fuel our workout properly. Instead of gaining energy and efficiency, trying to work out on an empty stomach will only drain you of energy for the coming hours. It’s better to at least have a light meal or small snack before each workout.
#3 Eat Medicines
Taking medicines on an empty stomach should always be avoided unless you have definite instructions from your doctor. Taking certain medications (especially antibiotics) can have a nasty affect because it could irritate the lining of the stomach. This may result in feeling nauseous or cause vomiting.
#4 Chew Gum
Chewing gum on an empty stomach could lead to stomach acid because of the acid that is produced while we chew it. Our body thinks we are eating something when we chew, so it produces acid to digest the food, however, since we are not really eating anything while chewing the gum, it can cause harm to the stomach linings.
#5 Drink Citrus Juices
Making yourself a yummy glass of lemonade or orange juice early in the morning may sound healthy and alluring but it’s not the best thing for your health. Drinking citrus juices on an empty stomach can irritate your stomach walls due to the excessive amount of acid in them. Always consider diluting citrus drinks with water to lower down the acidity.
#6 Go Grocery Shopping
Going grocery shopping on an empty stomach can only mean one thing: you will buy more than you actually need because the feeling of hunger will make you think you can consume a lot. Moreover, when a person is hungry, he tends to crave high carb and sweet things. This will cause you to fill up your trolley with lots of junk items!
#7 Eat Spicy Food
Eating spicy food on an empty stomach increases the chances of you having some kind of stomach irritation. However, minor spices like cumin can be a little less irksome to the digestive system. Spicy dishes should be best saved for when we already have something in our stomach.
