7 ‘Jamaat’ teachers held

Police arrested seven teachers including the principal of a school and recovered a huge number of leaflets, books and ‘anti-government’ publications from the school compound in the city's Kotwali area Saturday.

The arrestees are workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and were involved in anti-government activities, Razib-al-Masud, assistant commissioner (AC) of Kotwali Zone, claimed when asked about the reason of their arrest.

Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, 52, is the principal of Dhaka Model Pre-cadet and High School on Awlad Hossain Lane.

Others are: Nure Alam Siddique, 63, Mohammad Ismail Khan, 29, Mohammad Sirazul Islam, 22, Tazul Islam, 36, Mohammad Obaidullah, 23, and Mohammad Rustum Ali, 25. Police identified them as teaching staff of the school.

Police officer Razib said that the principal is the treasurer of Jamaat’s Kotwali Thana unit. He started the school along with Nure Alam in 1990 to run party activities under the guise of teaching children.

"They recruited party activists as teachers and used the school as their den," the assistant commissioner said.

Police also recovered posters, which demand release of the ‘war criminals’, anti-government booklets and CDs from the school office, he added.

After school or before school, one cannot indulge in seditious activities within the school premises.

The problem in this subcontinent is that we don't give education and educational institutions their due as it used to be done before.

I am just amazed by the hypocrisy. If AL people had been arrested by the BNP-Jamat government I bet Tiki Tam Tam would be complaining about BD becoming a Taliban fascist state. However, since its Jamat supporters who are arrested he is justifying the hell out of it.

Listen, do you even know the difference between "sedition" and "difference of opinion"? Disagreeing with the government is not sedition.

Secondly, if it is their own school they can do what they damn well please inside it (legal things that is). It is a private school and not a government school. You are just making up lies out of thin air.

1) It was perfectly legal to oppose the government.
2) It was perfectly legal to use your own property to oppose the government.

As far as the difference between 'sedition' and 'difference of opinion' why did you not ask Bangla Bhai or Khaleda who hung him? I am sure you would be of the opinion that Bangla Bhai was a great patriot and that awful woman Khaled wreaked vengeance and cussedness.

Even if one owns a school, there is the question of ethics and morality.

I'm not too sure how credible this claims are but according to some sources, journalists who are speaking against the govt are being abducted or jailed for seditious charges. There is a direct pressure from the govt to censor stories which might "hurt" national interest and journalists are constantly threatened for reporting "abduction" or "missing person" stories.
BNP and Jamaat seems pretty spineless and weak, and I doubt the hartals or any mass demonstrations will cause any change. Anyways, seems like awami league is here to stay for a pretty long time.

If Rakhi Bahini was like BDR, we wouldn't be complaining now, would we? Rakhi Bahani was fierce, focused and efficient at getting things done. Offcourse, all for the wrong reasons, which is why they are a sad chapter in Bangladesh's history.
