7.9 magnitude quake strikes Indonesia, tsunami warning issued

Indonesia issued a tsunami warning for West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh after a powerful and shallow earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck off the west coast of the island of Sumatra on Wednesday, the National Meteorological Agency said.

The shallow quake, which hit southwest of the island of Sumatra, had a depth of 10 kilometers with the epicenter located 808 kilometers southwest of Padang, Channel News Asia reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties but the shallower a quake, the more likely it is to cause damage

The USGS originally categorised the quake as magnitude 8.2, then 8.1, before lowering it to a 7.9 quake.

In 2004, a powerful tsunami reached as far as India when a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck 160 kilometers off the western coast of Sumatra.

Indonesia Tsunami Warning Lifted After Quake

Indonesia Tsunami Warning Lifted After Quake
A powerful and shallow earthquake strikes off the Sumatra coast with an official saying "some" people have been killed.

Indonesia issued a tsunami warning after an earthquake of magnitude 7.9 hit west of the island of Sumatra.

The quake's epicentre was 502 miles southwest of Padang and was six miles deep, according to the US Geological Society.

It struck at around 6.50pm local time (12.50GMT), was felt at least as far away as Malaysia and Singapore and had initially been measured at 8.2.

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage but the National Meteorological Agency said a tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Sumatra, including West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh.

The quake was felt strongly in Padang in West Sumatra for a few seconds, according to a journalist in the city for news agency AFP.

People ran out of their homes to higher ground.

Traffic ground to a halt and there was a sense of panic on the streets, the journalist said.

Around an hour later, it was reported by local channel TVRI that the warning had been cancelled.

Marjina, a resident of Sikakap in the Mentawai islands, about 720 kilometres (450 miles) from the quake's epicentre, told Associated Press that it was felt weakly there, but the tsunami warning caused panic, sending villagers running to higher ground.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology issued a marine warning for distant Cocos and Christmas islands, saying strong and dangerous currents were possible and people should secure boats and avoid waterfront areas.

A tsunami watch was issued for parts of Western Australia but has since been cancelled.

Indonesia was badly hit by the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004, which killed more than 170,000 people in the country.

Indonesia straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where different plates on the earth's crust meet, creating a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Wow 7.9 and no damage or tsunami...must be a miracle.

I'm in eastern Indonesia (the quake was in the west), didn't feel a thing here.

Thank God, no human casualty. It seems people over there know the drill very well.

shit not again
god save those people.
