AHMEDABAD/ NADIAD: A recent and successful operation of NaMo nerds - the zealous champions of Narendra Modi in cyberspace - demonstrated how the nerds aim to channel online fawning into real-life action.

The 'Narendra Modi Army', a popular Facebook group which operated from Gwarlior, managed to rustle up a crowd of protesters outside L K Advani's home after Modi was elected as the BJP's election campaign chief.

Modi's cyber-devotees - most of whom are volunteers - congregate in scores of online groups like the 'Narendra Modi Army'. Among the most active of such groups on Facebook are 'Narendra Modi 4 PM'; 'Bharat Maa Ka Lal' ; 'Bond of India 2014'; and 'Modi: Hit and Fit for PM 2014'. On Twitter, Modi fans run 54 accounts.

Though the BJP has not declared its prime ministerial candidate, Modi's virtual warriors are treating that as inevitability, creating the 'NaMoBharat' feed on Twitter and Facebook; and developing specialized android and iOS apps that enable micro-targeting on social networks.

While on targeting, it must be noted that any nerd who gets out of line is targeted with unrelenting aggression. For instance Partesh Patel, 27, who used to run 'Modi nu Gujarat' fan page on Facebook, today gets ominous late-night calls and vulgar messages on his social networking platform.

"I am being treated like this only because I left the BJP's IT cell," Patel says. "I was a volunteer there and I have more than 95,000 likes and an equally strong membership on my page even to this day. I now campaign for the Congress because volunteers like me who spent close to a decade campaigning for the BJP are not recognized."

The NaMo nerds, however, press on. They are showing the effectiveness of social media tools like Twitter dashboards and friend-adders in scaling up fan numbers. As for the BJP IT team itself, its core members are Hemang Jani and Maulik Bhagat.

The duo's team posts live updates on dozen-odd social media pages. Jani also employs a team of graphic designers who make cartoons which are popular on the net. The head of BJP's IT cell, Rajeeka Kacheria, a beautician, has introduced the 'BJPKemp' software that collated news reports from every constituency during the Gujarat assembly elections. The data was used to assess voter mood.

Youngsters who sustain the Modi buzz online are rewarded with the ultimate prize of fandom - an opportunity to meet Modi. "In Gujarat young college students are taken in batches by BJP zonal heads for an exclusive photo-op and meeting with Modi," says a senior IT cell member. "This is how the numbers are gathered."

I think I ran into one yesterday :D

There is nothing to be proud of being a Hindu and please do not drag religion in to politics. Hinduism is about a way for realization of spirit and has nothing to do with politics or politicians.

You are unaware that 'internet hindu' is a derisive term used by self proclaimed 'secularist' for people who defend Hinduism and Hindu Rights on the world wide web.

Its a term coined by journalist and congress lackey Sagarika Ghose, wife of Rajdeep Sardesai.

7,200 e-soldiers, I believe every other Indian on the net wants Modi as PM in 2014

Last time pdf took a poll ....72% wanted Modi for PM :P. Looks like pdf is full of 'NaMo e-soldiers'

I just have a wrong feeling about Modi though ill vote for BJP i just dont like the way he works. Somehow it looks so fake, He is smart which makes him even more deadly.

Who knows he might just sell the whole country to MNC's and its population as labour.

PS: all are my personal views and yes others may say otherwise lets see what happens 2014 and what he can do for the next five years. I might change my opinion.

Personally he has not yet become a leader i still feel he is more like a Bollywood star than a leader. Just look at the media gimmicks and publicity stunts.

Proud to be a Hindu ... and a Hindu Nationalist ...

not employed by any IT cell, a Engineer by profession... but a supporter due to my instinct to get best for my Nation ...

i can tell u there are not just 7,200 but more then a million active hardcore Modi Supporters on internet who wanna promote MODI as PM...

apart from that we have million's of Internet Hindus ...

. .
Why shouldn't I be proud to be a Hindu?

And regarding the term Internet Hindu please read this
India: Meet the 'Internet Hindus' | GlobalPost

I dont like it because it divides people. I am a Hindu but i dont want a tag around me that i am a Hindu, May be i just want equality where everyone is just human and not Hindus or Muslims.

'Internet Hindu' is great and i know what its about but how can we call ourselves secular when we are ourselves grouping up as Hindus?

Somehow i just hate it when people categorizes themselves on religion but then its my view.

@navtrek ..... if its a feeling then its probably a reaction to the media bile against NaMo.

However if you want to look at it logically then you will see that he is a 62 year old Man with No Wife and No Kids. His mother lives alone in a small middle class house. NaMo has no contacts with his family nor has he EVER done any favors for them. He was born poor and have struggled ALL HIS life to make a living and do something positive for society.

There is absolutely NO MOTIVE for him to sell the whole country to the MNC.

....That is even if you disregard all that he has done for the BJP and for Gujarat.

If he can inspire me to fight for his cause then that is leadership. I am not even a gujarati nor do I live or work in Guajarat, nor am I a member of RSS or VHP. I am not a young college kid to get inspired by talks nor am I poor or belong to OBC to somehow relate to him.

Logically there is no reason for me to support him or fight for him. Still I do it, If that is not Leadership, then I don't know what is.

And I dare say I am not along in this fight .......a Large part of India seems to be with me.

+1, I don't think he stands out as a national leader yet, though there are not many options around.

I just hope all this hype around him doesn't end up like what happened to Imran Khan and his campaign. Besides the first hurdle is he needs to be nominated as a PM candidate - which hasn't happened yet.
