$62m USAID’s intervention yields $175m agri crops

By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: With the USAID intervention of $62 million (agriculture recovery project), the flood-affected areas across the country produces wheat crops worth $175 million.

A USAID expert told journalists Tuesday after devastated flood 2010, the USAID came out for the rescue of farmers in 22 flood affected districts in KPK, Punjab and Balochistan in rabbi season 2010-11.

He said the USAID’s Agriculture Recovery Project started in Sept 2010 and it would be completed by end June 2011. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization was the implementer of this project.

Under this project, the USAID distributed wheat seed package (seed plus fertilizer) to 410000 farming families of KPK, Punjab and Balochistan, who got production worth $175 million.

The 12 districts of KPK, 6 of South Punjab and 4 district of Balochistan were benefited from the USAID project.

He said by the time of floodwater receded from Sindh, the wheat season was over, that was why Sindh province could not cover under this USAID project.

The USAID provided direct inputs for livestock including animal feed, fodder seed and medicines worth $8 million. The USAID provided cash for work to rehabilitate the silted watercourses with an amount of $2 million.

In total 569,605 families benefited which at the rate of seven per farming family, comes to a total population of 4.5 million directly benefiting from the project.

The wheat seed is going to be highly productive for at least another four years. This silt, which resulted in to a rocky soil this year, will become very soft when it is ploughed next year and if water availability remains the same then next year, using the same seed, production will be more than this year. Even if production remains the same, as it was this year, the total benefits over the next four years just from the wheat crop will be worth $700 million. The on-farm watercourse rehabilitation will also be helpful to transport water from source to fields for another 5 to 7 years.

Under this project, he said wheat inputs for each farming family included 50 kg certified wheat seed, 50 kg urea fertilizer and 50 kg DAP. The flood badly damaged watercourses in the affected districts and for its cleaning, the USAID provided cash for work program.

The farmers were paid for cleaning their watercourses, which ensured smooth supply of water to wheat crops.

For Livestock supplies, the farmers were given feed, fodder seed and medicines and 405 grams seeds of four types of vegetables per household.

USAID expert said under this intervention, 409,585 households were benefited from Wheat Inputs package, 25,250 households from cash for work and 134,770 households from Livestock supplies.

He said under the USAID intervention, 449,585 acres of land was cultivatedusing certified wheat seed and it produced 630,000 tons of wheat worth $175 million.

Direct total benefits of the project is $185 million, which consists of wheat production $175 million, cash for work (watercourses) $2 million and livestock supplies worth $8 million.

Commendable act but we really need some trade concessions , to bring up our economy from flood and terrorist based harm done to our tourism and trade

This is just a drop of water

Losses due to terrorism

60,000,000,000 (Sixty Billion range)
20,000,000,000 (Flood damages)
###65,000,000 (Aid mentioned in above case)

Such a small number - appreciated but ... still very small contribution

What we really should have deserved was loan forgiveness and trade concessions , and Trade opportunities

AZADPAKISTAN

Let's grow up from this mentality, about loan forgiveness and trade consessions.

On one hand, you want 20 Frigates and destroyers, and on the other hand, you want other countries to help us. We Pakistanis always have this bad habit on depending on others for our own desires. Let's help ourselves this time.

Furthermore, it is good enough USAID has even lend a helping hand to help us, when you realise that during the flood period, there were a shortage of donation. Please be appreciative. Like they said, a thousand miles journey begin with a single step

One day hopefully, Pakistan's economy would be back on track and then we will be able to afford to and reduce the poverty rate.
