That's only because manufacturing moved overseas and the whole concept of "build cheap but good enough" has taken over the world. These days consumer parts are made by joining two halves made from a mould instead of one solid cast piece. The logic being that well it is "good enough" to serve the purpose and it is far far cheaper to mass produce.

Certainly when plastic items started to replace metal items in the 1950's using moulds that put pressure on metal casting to be replaced too. I have a water pump where I have the option to buy a cast metal impeller or a moulded plastic one. The metal one is significantly more expensive.
