They managed to catch seven of the gang and gave them a good beating, leaving six dead on spot and another critically injured.

All Savar victims are students | Bangladesh | bdnews24.com

Savar, July 18 (bdnews2.com) — All the six suspected robbers killed in a mob-lynch attack at Keblar Char were students.

The six were beaten to death by an angry mob at Keblar Char in the early hours of Sunday. Relatives identified them at Dhaka Medical College Hospital where they were taken for autopsy.

The deceased were identified as Bangla College students Ibrahim, 24, Shanta, 24, and Polash, 26, Tejgaon Government College student Tipu Sultan, 23, and Mastermind International School and College's A–level student Shams Rahman Shammam, 22.

The sixth victim, Monir Setaf, was a student of BBA at Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT).

"After investigation, actions will be taken against those responsible," he assured the agitated people quoting the home minister.

Deputy commissioner (Mirpur zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Imtiaz Ahmed echoed the local MP.

"If it's found after investigation that it was a case of murder, the culprits will be arrested," he said.

The family members of the deceased, however, claim that they were killed in a planned way.

Shammam's cousin Rifat told bdnews24.com that he was a meritorious and sports-loving student. "There is no question of his engaging in a robbery."

Ibrahim's father Abu Taher, a fruit vendor, said, "I was providing his educational expenses with my hard-earned money. He went out on Sunday midnight to say his prayers and we received his dead body today."

Earlier, police told reporters a different story. The law enforcers alleged that the deceased were preparing to commit robberies in the area.

Sub-inspector of Savar Model Police Station Aminur Rahman told bdnews24.com that they arrested a seventh person, Al Amin, in this connection. The arrestee, a 22-year-old man, was being treated at Savar Health Complex, he said.

Rahman said the mob attack took place when the 'suspects' were preparing to commit robberies in the area. He said they recovered a number of sharp weapons from the spot.

Al-Amin, however, denied all the allegations and claimed that the weapons recovered from the scene were not theirs.

He said the deceased were his close friends and they had been there to take drugs when some people suddenly swooped on them. "My friends were killed on the spot," he added.

He also alleged that they were beaten in presence of police.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, Amin said, "We're wandering in the area. Suddenly, we saw lights flashing towards us. We thought these were headlights of trucks, but it became clear when the crowd got close. They started beating us before we could realise anything."

"At one stage, I requested an elderly man to set me free, but as he joined others to beat me, I then urged a police officer to save me."

"I heard the police officer telling the crowd that there will be a problem if everyone is killed. He asked them to keep someone alive and I was that lucky man," he added.

SI Aminur said, "Police launched another drive near the spot. They reached the spot at the last stage. We had nothing to do as the locals were very angry."

Wandering at night in somebody else's neighbourhood could call trouble. I cant blame those mobs who are repeatedly robbed or hijacked. These people should had known better. Seems like these are drug addicts.

Students taking drugs at night at someone elses area. I dont blame the people for mistaking them for robbers. RIP to the dead

You mean to say that people cannot go where they want during night?

Some type of night curfew is imposed by the common people?

Don't you all have beat policemen who move around at night to check if any suspicious chaps are moving around?

Or, is it common for common people to thrash people to death for going to an area that is not theirs?

If you feel that it was correct to thrash people to death because they were out of their locality, then what is all this RIP that you write?

Foot on both boats as the proverb goes?

It is a community based society my friend.

I still remember long time ago when I was sitting by the grave of my grand father at night, the villagers came out with lights and hurricane. They came close and made sure that it was me and gone back. I was hardly known to them as I used to live in Dhaka.

i thought domestic issues were not to be discussed here, as they were against the rules of the forum.

i felt sorry when i heard the news.. They were students... They went out of home telling their family they are going to offer prayer in the mosque the whole night as it was shab-e-barat. Instead they went to a deserted place to take drug.. Local people mistook them as robbers.. Anyway who knows they were robbers maybe... It is common for college students to commit crime to bear drug expenses...

It is also community based in India. So, what's new?

This is not a domestic issue.

This is a social issue and aimed to illustrate the life in Bangladesh as per whoever started the thread.

It is education for others who are not Bangladeshis.

Depends on interpretation.

Well regardless whatever they were doing it was totally wrong for the villagers to beat them to death.

BD will never become a great country if the rule of law is not obeyed.

I mean, justice has to be proportionate to the crime committed. First of all, 6 are alleged robbers and since when is it okay for people to beat people to death for smoking marijuana? Marijuana is available on every corner of the street, and this is not justifiable to me in anyway that some members are actually sympathizing with the mob. Second of all, even if this were robbers, it is no excuse to beat them to death. I have seen many real life examples of mobs beating up thieves and criminals and in anyway it never seemed justifiable. Anyways, this are students who come from a decent/semi decent schools and colleges, kind of like most us here, and we should be sympathizing with their families. It could have been any one of us here.

Thank you UKBengali and Saleen.

I agree that one cannot take law into their own hands.

They could have been handed over to the police.

One cannot condone vigilante justice!

It will lead to chaos.

Who is to decide what is right or wrong and then thrash chaps to death!

.
Can't beleive a student from mastermind got trapped
in the chaos, what kind of society are we turning into?

The way police tried to cover up the incident
following everything is disturbing indeed.

One thing that needs to be investigated is why are
people so brutal at times, is it because of economy or political
cat fights?
