Germans killed in Pakistan strike

A suspected US drone strike has killed eight fighters in northwest Pakistan, with Pakistani intelligence officials saying that at least five of the the men were Germans.

They also said that the eight men, killed in the raid on a mosque in Mir Ali in North Waziristan on Monday, were members of a group called Jihad Islami.

But independently confirmed details of the incident were unavailable with both the US and German governments refusing to comment.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from the Pakistan capital, Islamabad, said at least three women have been confirmed killed in the raid. There are reports of some children being killed too, he said.

"What is raising the alarm bells here is that despite the fact that there may some evidence to suggest that these people are indeed militants, Germans in this case ... there is, of course, this apprehension that most of the time these strikes are taking place not caring about the cilvain casualties."

Foreign Islamists

Matthias Gebauer, the chief correspondent for German news magazine Der Spiegel, told Al Jazeera that while finding verified information on the attack had been difficult, news that German citizens may be among those killed in the strike "did not come as a big surprise".

"Because we know that about a couple of dozen German Islamists went from Germany to the Paksitani tribal belt, especially to Mir Ali," Gebauer said.

There are reports that al-Qaeda's leadership, increasingly restrained by missile strikes from US drones in northwest Pakistan, prizes such "home-grown" recruits as they have Western passports, and some militants are foreigners who have taken up the cause of holy war against the West.

Pakistan's northwest region is seen by the US as a training ground for fighters. It has been hit with 21 drone attacks in September alone, the highest number in a single month.

Besides al-Qaeda fighters, the CIA has been trying to eliminate leaders of the Haqqani network, an Afghan Taliban faction operating out of North Waziristan.

Terror threat

Monday's attack came a day after the US and the UK warned of an increased risk of terrorist attacks in Europe.

The alerts about possible attacks in Europe highlight concern that growing numbers of fighters are going from the West to remote war zones for training in answer to al-Qaeda's online call for violence.

The immediate trigger for Sunday's travel alerts was intelligence about a plot against European targets reportedly originating with a group of individuals in mountainous northern Pakistan, some of them believed to be European citizens.

Few details of the conspiracy are known. But the plot appears to be of the kind that Western officials believe poses the most significant danger - the use of so-called self-radicalised individuals with no previous record of extremism.

5 Germans said killed in Pakistan missile strike

By ASIF SHAHZAD (AP) –

ISLAMABAD — A U.S. missile killed five German militants taking shelter in a house in northwest Pakistan on Monday, intelligence officials said.

The attack hit a house in North Waziristan. That region has been named as the source of a European terror plot that has prompted American authorities to issue a travel advisory. One or more German citizens are reported to be linked to the plot.

The missile strike took place in the town of Mir Ali, a known hub for foreign militants with links to al-Qaida.

Two officers said the five victims were believed to be German citizens in the region for terrorist training.

A third said they were believed to be foreigners, but gave no details.
The officials spoke anonymously because their agency does not permit operatives to be named in the media.

They said the house, located near a mosque and a hospital, was owned by a local resident, Sher Mullah.

A resident, Azmatullah Dawar, said Mullah was in the custody of intelligence agencies after he was arrested with a German national some months ago in northwestern Bannu district.
"He had given shelter to all these Germans," he said.
Two more residents, Hakimullah Khan and Nasrullah Wazir, said they saw some of the bodies after the strike and they all appeared to be foreigners.

Killing so many foreign militants in a single strike would be unusual.
A German Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday his office was currently checking the reports. He declined to be named in line with policy.

Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office has said that there is "concrete evidence" that 70 of some 220 people who have traveled from Germany to Pakistan and Afghanistan for paramilitary training have received it. It is believed that about a third of those 70 have returned to Germany.

A senior Pakistani intelligence official said last week that some 60 Germans were believed to be in the region where the latest missile strike occurred. He said eight of them — as well as two Britons, one of whom was killed in a Sept. 8 missile strike — were at the heart of the Europe terror plot.

U.S. officials rarely confirm the identities of those who are being targeted by the CIA-led missile campaign.
Sometimes information given by intelligence officials turns out to be false. More often than not it is never confirmed or denied. Sometimes militant organizations announce the names of those killed, but typically not for weeks or months.

Last month, American spy planes carried out 21 missile attacks in northwest Pakistan, more than twice the highest number in any previous month over the last six years.
Associated Press writer Rasool Dawar in Peshawar contributed to this report.

WOW..so now we are becoming the center of world terrorist *****..every terrorist wants to hole up in our northern areas like it was a holy land!

.
Is this related to the recent travel advisory from the US to its citizens traveling in Europe?... If it was, then that was a really quick reaction.

The WoT is pushing deeper and deeper into Pakistan now. Seems like most of the operations these days gaining media attention is happening around the Waziristan area.

.
Germans? I wonder why they decided to come to Pakistan ? How on earth did they end up with the terrorists ?

Must be a conspiracy theory.

Seriously i hope this opens peoples eyes as to what is going on here.

This Af-P@k strategy has led to a huge Cluster-fu5k situation for all the players involved. The US attitude of "in for a penny, in for a pound" has not only thrown them into a quagmire, but also Afghanistan and Pakistan are going to be consumed by this Taliban conflagration.

I really feel sympathetic for Pakistan ; Poor people are going to see no end to a conflict either from the TTP or from the Hekmatyars, if at all US asks Pakistan to take the WoT into NW.

German Islamists to be precise. Another report from Al-Jazeera as well.

Alot of people were writing these alerts off as scare tactics by the U.S. So now that we see they are not scare tactics at all and you now have Europeans coming to Pakistans tribal regions for god knows what.

It may or may not have been scare tactics... could be a sense of urgency to put more pressure on Pakistan to restore their supplies and also to move to the N. Waziristan area. This still remains the last areas where the PA hasn't been able to go into because of the hostile terrain.

Now how do they know that they were Germans is upto the PA to explain. This is the first time I have seen the nationality mentioned in the drone attacks. Until now they usually just mention terrorists without any nationality. Something to ponder.

It could be them trying to justify the alert in Europe by calling out nationality. Pressure like you said would also be one.

Helicopter operations would work in these areas no ? If pakistan sent in cobras. The thing with drone strikes is they can only hit stationary stuff. They can't go after people on the move. A helicopter can hit a area then go after the runners.

Not so easy... for Heli operations you still need good ground support and logistics as well. To move all equipment into the mountains which don't have good roads is also a challenge. I am not an expert on PA operations in this area, but read it somewhere in another thread about the challenges faced in NW. Hopefully the NATO forces and PA can collaborate to undertake the operations in NW, since NATO already has expertise in operating in similar areas in Afghanistan.

.
But drones do have much greater endurance. They can patrol an area for hours gathering info. and when they see a group of militants, they can engage immediately.
As for NW, I have repeatedly seen news clips that fighters from all over the Arab world, some parts of Europe (especially Germany), and many countries of Central Asia were present. A few months ago a German militant was killed in in an engagement with the PA. I'm not sure if they are actually plotting a major attack or if they're even capable of doing so. They're not Alqaeda, they're the Taliban. Alqaeda consists of learned, well-funded, well-trained operators. Whereas the Taliban consists of farmers and shepards, who don't have any global agenda. They are only concerned with their own land, nothing else. If someone attacks their land, they fight back, simple. And I doubt Pakistan will let Alqaeda operate from inside it's territory, and wants nothing to do with it. So, it could be a hype created to pressurize Pakistan to launch an operation in NW. Because first the U.S gave the impression that America was in danger from the Taliban, when PA did not bend, now they are saying the whole of Europe as well as the U.S is in danger of an attack from the Taliban.
Every time the U.S. announces something drastic, I always second guess it, because America has a history of using every technique outlined by the international laws as illegal. The fact will remain that they are not above the law, they are the law, and everyone who disagrees with them, are labled as terrorists (e.g Iran).

I think that is where problems start to happen. Pakistan has made it clear no helicopters allowed even in hot pursuit cases.

.
Agree these are purely confidence issues on either sides (PA and NATO). I feel it will be a huge logistical challenge with the potential of consuming a significant amount of time to keep the forces engaged in the remote mountains. At the moment PA is not using any of NATO equipment and logistical help, but if they were to operate together, PA can get some logistical help from NATO forces... but of course that means that they will have to allow then to have bases within Pakistan... which seems to be a far thought given the current situation.
