ISLAMABAD: A joint working group of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor fine-tuned on Wednesday almost 6,000MW of power generation projects for their signing during the forthcoming visit of President Xi Jinping.

According to an official statement, a meeting of the group on energy projects, jointly presided over by Water and Power secretary Mohammad Younas Dagha and Vice Administrator of China’s National Energy Administration Zhang Yuqing, expressed satisfaction over the progress made by both sides to achieve all deliverables ahead of schedule.

Informed sources said the two sides had finalised arrangements for the signing of an agreement between the State Grid China and National Transmission and Dispatch Company on two transmission lines – one from Matiari to Lahore and the other from Matiari to Faisalabad – after vetting by their legal teams.

The group also finalised the signing of term sheet and implementation agreements for setting up 1,320MW coal-based power project near Port Qasim and tripartite implementation and power purchase agreements for another 1,320MW coal-based project in Sahiwal, Punjab. The meeting expressed satisfaction over the term sheets from Chinese banks enabling the finalisation of implementation and power purchase agreements for a 660MW coal-based plant of the Thar power project.

The two sides will also sign a term sheet for 3.8 million tons per annum coal mining by Sindh-Engro Coal Mining Company. An agreement for a 900MW solar power project at Quaid-i-Azam Solar Park in Bahawalpur by Zonery of China is also ready for signing, despite reservations by certain government agencies that such a big solar project does not fit into the overall government policy of getting affordable energy because of its high rate of 14.5 cents per unit.

The two sides have already approved contracts with banks for financing a 100MW wind power project of United Energy Pakistan (China) at Jhimpir in Thatta and 50MW each of Dawood Hydro of China at Bhamboor and of Sachal at Thatta. Their groundbreaking will coincide with Chinese president’s visit.

The meeting also finalised the signing of a financing agreement for 870MW Sukki-Kinari hydropower project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and groundbreaking of 720MW Karot hydropower project in Azad Kashmir.

According to the official statement, the water and power secretary told the working group that the Pakistani side had taken all steps to achieve major objectives within the agreed schedule and most of the projects would be ready for execution over the next few days.

The meeting expressed confidence that activities on major portions of the early harvest projects in the energy sector would materialise in near future.

The meeting was attended by the secretaries of planning and petroleum, senior Chinese officials and representatives of about 20 Chinese companies, banks and sponsors associated with the corridor projects.

If they don't sign proper agreements, then people like you will complain "NS did it because they wanted to make commission", if he follows the process, he's dammed. Do you have anything called patriotism towards your country? I wonder that a lot reading these silly posts.
Plus, if there is no proper agreement in the pictures, the next government will destroy this government's progress to point score, something that happens a lot in your political system without caring for the country. So agreements are a must have.

Last, SOMEONE finally started to take care of 70 years of mess no one cared for. So it'll take time. But within the current term, there is serious growth and electric production estimates, which will become reality by 2017. So you'll need to wait. These things don't happen over night. Putting blame on the current government for all evil, isn't correct. You and your countrymen should question, how you got there in the past 70 years.....there lies the REAL answer!

How do you JUST start work? Don't you think if they did that, many on here like you and across Pakistan will then bash them that they started to work directly as they were making commission, and the money was going to their bank account, etc??? They are following the process, and taking care of 70 years of mess. Its not that easy obviously, so give them time to plan and execute their plan. How many times, a government in the entire history of Pakistan, plans for 30 years worth of electric production???? This is THE firs time. Allow someone to set a base for your country to grow upon!

These guys are planning for electric expansion till 2040. So yes, it would look like there have been projects signed for 200000MW, but those are phased over two + decades. I hope you understand, this is THE first time, a government is ACTUALLY planning for the future of Pakistan over next many decades. Not just today and tomorrow, like its been for the past 70 years!! So give them time to complete executing their plan till the end of their term!!

bahsha will never be built. however, LNG and neelum jehlum would be the only projects completed.

yeah because pakistan is full of retards and idiots, so we have to depend on chinese engineering firm to build power plants for us. why not sign an agreement to import an efficient prime minister from china?
oh wait right, none of these MOUs actually ever get implemented.....

LOL nothing practical on ground. Just keep signing and signing, who cares.

The MoUs of these projects had already been signed during PM's visit to China. The term sheet contains the prominent feature of a contract and once signed lead to final agreement after accounting for legalities.

Chinese are among the very few nations who still come to work in Pakistan. Have you ever seen French,Germans,English and American engineers coming to complete their projects. Especially when the TTP and terrorists have kept them on hit list.

Better to collabrate with a friendly neighbour than to look towards europeans and american who could ditch you any day.

The point was that in current circumstances its very generous and brave of Chinese to venture in Pakistan for these projects.
