Mumbai: As many as 48 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants working as construction labourers at various sites in Wadala TT area in central Mumbai have been arrested, police said on Friday.

Besides the 48 Bangladeshis, the special branch of the Mumbai police on Thursday also arrested four labour contractors, who helped the illegal immigrants stay in the city without proper documents.

The Bangladeshis were working for various major corporate firms, police said.

According to police, the arrested Bangladeshis admitted of buying bogus voter identity cards from West Bengal for Rs. 150, which they used in claiming that they were Indian nationals.

Total 1,121 Bangladeshis were arrested from the city in 2012, of which, 250 have been deported to Bangladesh.

"We checked the identity of over 2,200 labourers working in 50 acres area in Wadala TT and found that 48 were Bangladeshis," said Sanjay Shintre, deputy commissioner of police.

Shintre said that they were carrying photocopies of bogus voter ID cards. "They have admitted that after sneaking into India, they bought the cards for Rs. 150 each from West Bengal and came to the city," he said.

According to Shintre, in 2012 alone, 1,121 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been arrested from the city. "Of the arrested 250 have been deported back to Bangladesh and procedure is on to send the rest back too."

What a headache these pole-vaulters are. If there is 2000 new illegals every year all the way in Mumbai, you can already imagine how they must be infesting near the India-Bangladesh border areas of Assam/West Bengal etc.

press tv and fox news are more believable than indian media!!!

Just read this line again

According to Shintre, in 2012 alone, 1,121 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been arrested from the city. "Of the arrested 250 have been deported back to Bangladesh and procedure is on to send the rest back too."

You shameless people will never accept reality

1. I do not know if this news is true or yet again another fabrication and piece of propaganda.

2. However I find it more plausible than the false claims (and I personally know there is no mass migration to Assam as I live near the Assam-BD border when I am in Bangladesh) of Bangladeshis being in other poverty-stricken states of India.

Why?

Mumbai is an economic metropolis with jobs and industries that attracts people from far and wide. I can imagine Bangladeshis going there and yes there may be some illegal immigrants there, but not in states of India where there are no jobs and residents themselves are going to other parts of India for work.

Immigration is a sensitive topic and local Marathis for example are not happy with the influx of outsiders from the BIMARU (Hindi-belt or Hindustan) states especially Biharis and this is also creating tensions.

Marathi nationalist Raj Thackeray threatened to call his fellow Indian countrymen from Bihar as "infiltrators".

- Thackeray said if the Bihar government causes problems his party will kick out every Bihari from Maharashtra, 0.20 mins of above video.

- He claimed over 95% of driving offences are carried out by people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, 1.04 mins of the video.

- He said 70-80% of crime in Mumbai is caused by Indians from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, 1.13 mins of the video.

So migration from region to region let alone country to country is causing tensions, not just in India but through out the world.
