3G mobile by this year for Bangladesh

Third-generation (3G) mobile phone network will be launched in Bangladesh by this year, Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said yesterday.

“The 3G mobile phone would bring revolutionary changes in the information and communication technologies including e-education and e-health,” he said while addressing as the chief guest at a function of Bangshal Girls' High School in the capital.

The telecom minister said new generation, especially the students, could play an important role in implementing Digital Bangladesh.

“We would be able to provide laptops to the students at low cost to reduce burden of the students on textbooks,” he added.

Local lawmaker Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Jinnat Ara Saleha, headmistress of the school, also spoke on the occasion.

Is there a large enough market in BD for 3G in BD?

Specially, the 3G enabled sets cost a significant amount. However, there are always cheap Chinese alternatives. How much does they charge for 3G services?

3G is old and out dated, they might aswell get the latest.

In Sri Lanka, we have 4G

In Pakistan as well - We've got direct 4g instead of 3g but GOVT is also giving 3g licenses now and Telenor Pakistan has infrastructure in place to support so its a matter of time only..

In Sri Lanka, we have 4G

Its not about getting 3G or 4G, but how much govt going to suck money from mobile operators. Govt is asking the operator to renew their 2G license first then apply for 3G so that they will get double the money.

Most of the operator have to use 3G equipment now as 2G equipments are already unavailable in market. So as soon as they were granted license you will start seeing the signal.
