“I will f**king cut you.”

Eighteen B-52 bombers took off from Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington on October 10, 1969, each loaded with nuclear weapons. Although the bombers were headed toward Moscow, the goal was to influence outcomes around Hanoi. The bombers’ mission was to proceed directly to the Soviet Union in order to convince the Soviets that America at the hands of President Nixon was willing to resort to nuclear war to win in Vietnam.

A critical component of Nixon’s foreign policy was to make the leaders of the Soviet Union and the Easter Bloc think he was insane — like really insane — and he wanted the Communist leaders of the world to believe that he was ready to start World War III to prevent communist expansion.

“I will f**king cut you.”

“I want the North Vietnamese to believe I’ve reached the point where I might do anything to stop the war,” Nixon told his Chief of Staff. “We’ll just slip the word to them that, ‘for God’s sake, you know Nixon is obsessed about communism. We can’t restrain him when he’s angry — and he has his hand on the nuclear button’ and Ho Chi Minh himself will be in Paris in two days begging for peace.”

Tough talk against a guy who went on the record willing to lose 10 Vietnamese for every invader.

“IDFWU” Love, Ho.

In 1968, Nixon campaigned on ending the war in Vietnam, but well into his first year in office, the North Vietnamese vowed to sit at the bargaining table in Paris “until the chairs rot.” Nixon wanted the Soviet leadership, widely seen as the puppeteers of North Vietnam’s leaders, to force the Vietnamese regime to conclude a peace agreement. The true intent of the plan was so secret, not even Gen. Bruce K. Holloway, commander of the Air Force’s Strategic Air Command knew the mission’s true purpose. The facts about the operation, called Giant Lance, were made public until a 2000 Freedom of Information Act request revealed it

“FOIA: Because it’s so much worse than you thought.”

The bombers flew along Soviet airspace for three days as other nuclear forces around the world – destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers doing maneuvers in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Gulf of Aden, and Sea of Japan – all executed secretly but designed to be detectable to the Kremlin. In response Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin met with Nixon to discuss the raised state of alert of U.S. forces.

The Madman Theory work in that respect. Dobrynin warned the Soviet leadership “Nixon is unable to control himself even in a conversation with a foreign ambassador,” about Nixon’s “growing emotionalism” and his “lack of balance.” Nixon would order an end to Giant Lance suddenly on October 30.

The plan didn’t end the war in Vietnam, however. It was the president’s belief his Madman Theory did lead to agreeable terms for the SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) and his anti-ballistic missile treaties with the Soviet Union in 1972. That same year Nixon would drive the North Vietnamese back to the bargaining table each time they tried to leave through a series of bombing campaigns on North Vietnamese targets with operations Linebacker and Linebacker II.

When America threatens to nuke someone, you know they mean business.

Since they are the only country in the world that has actually used nuclear weapons on civilian populations. Twice.

You know they mean it. Same as how America's General MacArthur threatened to nuke China in the 1950's when they were forced into their longest ever retreat during the Korean War.

Waiting for China and Russia to nuke them.

If America thought it was wrong to use nuclear weapons on civilian populations, they would punish themselves first, since they are the only ones who have done it.

They obviously aren't even THINKING about punishing themselves. Polls showed a majority of Americans thought that the nuclear attacks on civilian populations was justified during WW2 (even after they had already won... it was done as a signal to the Soviet Union).

So the ONLY way to stop them, is to have thermonuclear weapons and ICBM's yourself. Even India/Pakistan don't have enough right now, they don't have thermonuclear tech or ICBM's yet.

if America had nuked vietnam there's not going to be ww3. Viet just not important enough. Don't hate me, im just a realist.
USSR and China certainly would not have revenged Vietnam had the Americans fooked the jungle the same way they did with Japan, therefor WW3 is BS.

If Vietnam got nuked by US back then, I think there was no choice left for USSR and China but to declare nuclear umbrella for Vietnam and to interfere further more into the war. Why? Because it‘s pure geo-politics. If US had crossed the line by nuke a non nuclear state, they must be stoped immediately from going further no matter we like the cost or not. Sure Russia and China could not launch direct nuclear strike to US soil to start a WW that would obliterate human race once for all, but we would have to declare nuclear umbrella to deter a second strike or even provide Vietnam some tactical nuclear weapons which is a less worse option to take, and the situation would eventually became a contest of will that we can not afford to chicken out, especially for China, because Russia is far away, far enough to afford the cost of leaving Vietnam in to a nuclear wreckage, but Vienam is right next our door. Imagine that if Vietnam became a redioactive wasteland and fall in to full grasp of US for good, what the security cost for us would be? Vietnam is not Afghanistan that neighboring to our relatively less populated and easy-to-defend northwest land, Vietnam is the front door of our southwest soil where huge population centers and crucial defence industry built, so China would not sit back to let US nuke Vietnam recklessly, and US knew that China could and would not to chicken out but the same situation applyed not to US it self, so they would not choose to nuke Vietnam at first, it's like Vietnam got a free nuclear umbrella somehow. If China or Russia invaded (or even nuke) Maxico or Canada or Cuba, the same logic would be appied to the US.
The fact is, China waged a war to France for Vietnam in 1883 and supported them hugely in their war against US in 1960-1970s because of not affection but our own good. Despite of territorial dispute, if US invade Vietnam today let alone nuke them, China will once again repeat the history, we'd rather keep them an independ country than let them fall into the hand of another superpower.

Vietnam was the victim back then, as their country was used by western democratic nations to counter communism (polar bear and panda).
