Tomorrow, Banks Will Not Swap Old Notes For New, Except For Seniors

There have been huge queues outside banks with people lining up to exchange old currency

NEW DELHI:
HIGHLIGHTS
  1. Tomorrow, only senior citizens can trade old notes for new ones
  2. Quota for one-time exchange is Rs.2,000
  3. Unlike last weekend, banks will be closed on Sunday

Banks tomorrow will not exchange the old 500 or 1,000 rupee notes for new bills, allowing only senior citizens to make the one-time swap for upto Rs.2,000. On Sunday, banks will remain shut.

"After this inking and all, we have seen for the last two days now, there is a visibly less rush in the banks. The queues are shorter and we hope things will settle down soon," said Rajiv Rishi, the head of the Indian Banking Association, adding that tomorrow will be used to clear a backlog of work.

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's sudden announcement last week outlawing high-denomination notes, banks have been overflowing with customers desperate to get cash. The bills that were cancelled form 86 per cent of the money in circulation.

"No, note exchange stopped for a day. Yet another whimsical decision. Government must explain. Is there currency shortage? Financial emergency," tweeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has attacked the ban on old notes as punishing the poor and wants it reversed, which the government has flatly ruled out.

Sources in the Finance Ministry today denied that there is a discussion on whether to end the offer of providing new notes for old ones. The cap was originally set at Rs. 4,000; it was raised at the start of the week to Rs. 4,500 only to be reduced yesterday to Rs. 2,000.

Banks have been asked to use indelible ink, just like in elections, to ensure people are not exchanging more cash than is permitted.

PM Modi's "demonetization" drive aims at curbing tax evasion, corruption and forgery. He has asked people to bear with temporary inconvenience. "Just give me 50 days," he said in an emotional speech last weekend as he pledged to stop the corrupt from "looting what belongs to the poor."

The government has emphasized that the move had to be abrupt to ensure those hoarding black money did not have time to channel it into assets like property. And though the reform has been generally praised by experts, the government appears to have incorrectly gauged the extent to which people would be left cashless, particularly in rural India.

Deaths are unfortunate...Modi should kill all the rats who are selling country by corruption..

Panipuri wallas started paytm service that's epic.. how many? The problem lies more in the city. Due to lack of cash availability and exchanging 2000 rs notes. You want to purchase things worth of 100rs. And when ATM dispensing 2k only. How the hell these vendors provide you change. When you are saying corruption due to big notes .. what you should call 2000 ! Do they high security features which is immune to fake ? Do this move balance blank miney wrt loss to economy. TG state accounts 2000++ crore loss for a week.

Hmm India is huge Noida is just small part of it. These vendors may have it. But crores of people not aware about paytm ..

Heights of hatred. Swachh Bharat is not for BJP only. I have no doubts some people can hate India or want such programs to fail.

What is there to say hatred. Am asking is govt allowed to print their programmes on it. Lolz hate India.. you guys become clueless. Hmmm CBN introduced a program on Domalapay dandayatra.. which means invasion on mosquito- funny program name isn't it, but it supposed to reduce mosquito.. such programme reflects their policy.. just Congress program to build houses for poor but outcome is different..

Why do your brain don't understand what am asking.

Wow you liberals are really a piece of work. Your hatred of Modi has now extended to opposing everything he does - including the swacch Bharat Abhiyan.

Can you please tell me what is your problem with that program

Get a life buddy.. stop bajana programme and do somewhere else.. Am just asking as i got doubt after i seen some pic above.. are the govt allowed to print such programme on currency.. I know about coins printed pics of persons or other on special occasions.

Tell us your exact problem with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on the note. Its a scheme introduced by an elected government, yes Government of India, not BJP. Read again. Is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan promoting hate?

Domalapai Dandyatra is a regional campaign? What has it got to do with rest of India?
