$30bn deal: US to sell F-15s to Saudi Arabia

They have to buy something military from the US. In exchange, they are left alone to sell oil. No threats, no war. They buy peace and prosperity in exchange for losing their independence in foreign policy. It is not such a bad deal in the short term considering how much trouble Iran goes through.

So why did they buy these Jets and that too spend $30 billion?

With no TOT or actual manufacturing happening in Saudi Arabia this deal is not comparable to the MMRCA. MMRCA involves more aircraft and complete TOT. Two very different situations.

We have to see how much manufacturing capability and technology the US is willing to transfer, and how much the Saudis are able to absorb, and whether they have the scientific-technical infrastructure in place to make that absorption possible. Serious doubts on both counts. The problem with Saudi Arabia is that even if they have well-educated people - in science, tech - those are given desk jobs with no real responsibility, and no real work ... and this is based on a lot of news reports ... if they change the system to get their people to do real work and participate, they could make significant progress. The problem is motivation ... when you have a winning lottery ticket there is not much motivation to work .... that is a natural human impulse and not specific to any nation.

Its a win win for both. Soudis dont trust iranians( one called them snake?) and US does not like iranians.
Soudis have good insurance against any country attacking them( or even arab spring getting there).

If you haven't noticed we have operated F-15s since the early 80s we have Al-Salam company which manufactures a ton of spare parts for the F-15s and also manufactures some engine components. We also have AEC which built the avionics and sub-systems of the last F-15C/D rehaule we already have plenty of technology related to the F-15 and also the F-15 has been reverse engineered already. Israel can make the F-16 from scratch if it wanted but it still buy new ones from the US.
