The government is going to buy 300 buses and trucks from India on credit from Indian Exim Bank for bolstering the transport fleet of state-run Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTC).

Finance Minister AMA Muhith came up with the disclosure to journalists at his secretariat Tuesday.

India has given no-objection clearance to 8 projects out of 20 at a cost of 100 crore US dollars financed by Indian Exim Bank, the minister said.

Asked how much money might be needed for the 300 buses and trucks, Mosharraf Hossain, secretary of Economic Relations Division (ERD), didn’t answer.

Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain and Dr Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister, were among others present at the press meet.

Is this related to defence? or just India phobia?

When rest of the Bangladeshis buy Tata and other Indian vehicles you do not have problem , but here you do when Bangladesh govt buy Indian vehicles with the credit line given by India. India phobia it is.

As long as relationship fortifies, the better it is....

Well Muhith did quote this also

“We could have bought them from other places, but since we’re getting the credit from India, we should bring them from India,” finance minister A M A Muhith told reporters on Tuesday after a meeting.

I wonder if the credit was even necessary ...

Its just the attitude which is bad, I dont think we are in anyway less, we have companies who are worlds 3rd and 4th largest Bus and truch manufacturers... Credit is an open option. Do not disgrace it just because it is from India.

Chennai, May 25:

Hinduja Group flagship company Ashok Leyland has bagged a $23.3 million order for supply of 290 fully-built double decker buses to Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation.

This represents the company’s largest single order for double decker buses from Bangladesh, a company statement here said.

“Bangladesh has always remained a very important market for us. Our continued focus on this robustly growing market has helped us establish ourselves today as the second largest brand in the country’s commercial vehicle market”, Ashok Leyland Managing Director Mr Vinod K Dasari said.

An agreement to this effect was signed between Ashok Leyland and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation recently, it added.

In 2010-11 Ashok Leyland’s exports grew by 72 per cent to touch 10,306 units in which significant contribution was to Bangladesh. Over the years, more than 9,500 vehicles have been exported to Bangladesh, the statement added.

Public can buy but when govt buys from India they need to answer , "why from India?". lol Indian companies are renowned vehicles makers and exports to many countries.

lolwut?

Whatever happened to the Volvo buses purchased for so much money, I don't wanna know. I think we know the future of these buses. Indian or Swedish - regardless.

And our finance minister doesn't want to say the price? Interesting. Also the most interesting finance minister Bangladesh ever had. Did I ever say he is the worst?
