JAMMU, July 16: Troops today achieved major success when they gunned down three Pakistani militants, affiliated to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), who were trying to infiltrate into the Indian territory from Line of Control (LoC) in Sabjian sector of Poonch district in the early hours of this morning.
“It was a group of three militants and all of them were killed during two hours long fierce exchange of gunbattle, which took place right on the LoC near Akbar Dhok in Sabjian sector of Poonch. The militants were well equipped with latest weapons and explosive devices,’’ official sources said.
General Officer Commanding (GOC), 16 Corps, Lt Gen RR Nimbhorkar told the Excelsior that troops were well prepared and they spotted the infiltration attempt immediately when the militants tried to enter into this side. All of them were killed. Troops didn’t suffer any casualties.
“There is concentration of the militants across the LoC. They will try to infiltrate but our troops are well prepared and fully geared-up to tackle the infiltration attempts. We are not going to allow the militants to succeed in their nefarious designs,’’ Gen Nimbhorkar said.
According to sources, the troops were maintaining strict surveillance in Sabjian sector for past 36 hours following inputs that a group of three heavy armed Pakistani militants had reached close to the LoC and could try to infiltrate anytime. Finally, the Army jawans traced the movement of militants through precise surveillance and kept tightening the cordon leaving no escape route for the militants.
“The desperate militants then brought down heavy firing on the troops to make determined attempt to infiltrate into the Indian territory. The Army personnel retaliated effectively. In the resultant encounter that lasted two hours, the troops gunned down all three militants by 8 am today,’’ sources said, adding that the operation was clean and not even a single Army jawan was injured in the operation.
Bodies of all three militants have been recovered from the LoC. However, their identity hasn’t been established so far but it seems that all of them were Pakistanis affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit.
The area had four to five hours foot trekking from Sabjian, sources said, adding that it was not possible for the troops to bring the bodies to Sabjian and they were likely to be buried at the LoC after completion of all legal and religious formalities.
“It was a flawless surgical operation executed by the Army ensuring neutralization of all the terrorists, who dared to cross the Line of Control, without any casualty of our own brave soldiers,’’ sources said.
The militants were carrying with them three AK-47 rifles, 11 magazines, three pouches, two grenades, two rucksacks, medicines, dry fruit and food. The medicines had Pakistan marking, which clearly indicated that they had come from Pakistan with intentions to create trouble in Jammu. All the items in possession of the militants have been seized by the troops.
Sources said Pakistan and their sponsored militants wanted to keep disturbances in Jammu region, which was completely peaceful despite nearly 10-day long unrest in Kashmir, which has claimed over 40 lives and left hundreds of others including many para-military and police personnel injured.
“It was a clear attempt by the LeT to carry out terror attacks in Jammu region with the help of three militants to disturb the entire State. However, their (the militants’) plan has been foiled with the killing of all three militants in the infiltration bid,’’ sources said.
This was the first major infiltration attempt on the LoC in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, which share LoC with Pakistan. However, it was foiled.
“The kind of arms, ammunition and explosives, which the militants were bringing with them, were capable of causing extensive damage. Further, the food and dry fruit with them indicated that they were infiltrating for a long drawn battle,’’ sources said.
Recently, in an inter-action with media at Nowshera, Lt Gen Nimbhorkar had stated that there could be “around 200 militants’’ waiting across the LoC for infiltration into this side. However, he had added that the troops were maintaining very high alert on the border to ensure that the militants didn’t succeed in their designs.
