Security forces killed three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists today in an encounter in Pulwama district located in Southern Kashmir. The operation lasted for over six hours, police said. Police sources told news agency IANS that an Army officer was also injured during the fierce exchange of gunfire.

The encounter started on Wednesday evening in Kakapora area of Pulwama after an intelligence input revealed that three local boys, who had joined the banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, were holed up inside a house located in a densely populated locality, a police official told PTI.

This is the first successful counter-insurgency operation in Pulwama area which is believed to have large presence of local terrorists aided with a strong-network of over ground workers, he said.

The identity of the three dead terrorists was being established, he added. The "successful" operation was a big blow to LeT that lost its commander Junaid Mattoo on June 17 last week in an encounter at Arwin village in Anantnag district of South Kashmir. Mattoo, who was involved in several attacks on security forces in south Kashmir, and two other terrorists were killed in a joint operation involving the Army, Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Meanwhile, searches are still going but the firing has ended, the Jammu and Kashmir police spokesman was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.

This is the second successful operation against the terror outfit within three days.

Unrest in Kashmir continues to simmer. While encounter in Pulwama was on yesterday, two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were killed in an encounter in Sopore township of Baramulla district in north Kashmir. Two AK rifles, five AK magazines, 124 AK rounds, a hand grenade and a pouch had been found at the encounter site, a police official said.
