CHATTOGRAM, Aug 25, 2018 (BSS) – Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said around 24 percent construction works of Karnaphuli tunnel has been completed.

The minister expressed his firm conviction that the government is relentlessly working to complete the construction work of the much awaited tunnel under the river Karnaphuli in time.

The minister told journalists after visiting project sheds, boring machine and boring area of the tunnel site at West Point of city’s Patenga this noon.

Quader directed the district administration and project authority to monitor strictly as the construction works to be completed of the much awaited tunnel under the river Karnaphuli in time.

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Organizing Secretary Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Deputy Publication and Publicity Secretary Aminul Islam, Chattogram Zilla Parishad Chairman M A Salam, President of Chattogram South District AL Muslem Uddin Ahmed, City penal mayor Chowdhury Hasan Mohammad Hasni and deputy Project Director Dr Anupom Shah were also present.

The 3.5 kilometres long four-lane tunnel, country’s first-ever tunnel, will make Chittagong into ‘One City Two Towns’, modelled on east and west Shanghai of China, project sources said.

China’s Exim Bank has provided soft loan around Taka 9,000 crore out of Taka 20,000 crore for the project while Chinese firm ‘China Communication Construction Company Ltd (CCCC), has been appointed as consultant for construction of the four-lane tunnel, the source added.

The total length of the proposed tunnel will be around 9.092 kilometres including 3.40 kilometres tunnel under the Karnaphuli River with an approach road of 4.89 kilometres alongside 740 metres of bridges linking the main port city, and western side of the Karnaphuli along with the heavy industry-prone eastern side of the river.

The multilane tunnel route will pass through the river close to Navy College on one side and Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) and Karnaphuli Fertiliser Company (Kafco) on the other.

The tunnel will cut the road distance between Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar, apart from facilitating the heavy traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway entering the port city to go to other parts of Chittagong division.

The tunnel will connect Chittagong Port and Anowara Upazila and is expected to make communication between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar easier also ease traffic on two bridges over the Karnaphuli River.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping jointly laid foundation stone on October 14 in 2017.

No the project cost is 1 billion dollar.9000 crore and 20,000 crore figure given here is bogus. Most probably a bad journalism. In all the other sources it is stated that the entire project cost is 8446 crore Taka or 1 billion dollar our of which 4799 crore Taka or 705 million dollar is being provided by Chinese Bank.Only in this piece of article I found this bogus amount of 9000 crore and 20000 crore.Check these article -

And this 1 billion dollar project is not just about the tunnel but approach road on both sides and including a 740 meter long bridge.See this animation on how much works involve the building up the river banks of the both sides of the tunnel. One billion dollar cost looks appropriate.

But no where few km approach costs this much. Well i have noticed one thing everything from few km to many kms costs billionsl dollars in Ban. There are excuse like its bec if high density or wet land. But if you look around countries have same features doesnt even cost half of it.

My calculation shows the construction cost as $22,550 per m2 for the Manhattan tunnel. Whereby the cost is $27,263 for the Karnafuli tunnel. Please read the excerpt from an Internet source.

"For what it’s worth, an 8-kilometer long, 9.7-meter wide tunnel from Staten Island to Manhattan would cost $1.75 billion at the same per-km, per-meter cost of this water tunnel".

- The cost in the above tunnel is ($1750million/ 8000m x 9.7m)= $22,550/m2.

- The 3.4 km Karnafuli tunnel has a diameter of 10.8m. So, the construction cost here is ($1,000 million/3400m x 10.8m)= $27,263/m2.

Yes, it is about $5,000 more per meter sq. than Manhattan. But, you have to understand while the Manhattan tunnel was built in an experienced and industrially developed country like the US, Karnafuli is being constructed by a Chinese company who has to import the heavy shield machine, the large dia. concrete linings and many pieces of equipment from a far away China.

This is why the cost a little bit higher than the Manhattan. But, I would not deny the possibility of bribery at the top political level as well.

Just like to add that import duty is so high for all those equipment or materials. So certain portion of money from the project come back to government indirectly.

I know work is being done, but one can't ignore the fact that former low class goons like Obaidul Quader are sitting on massive jackpots. Look at him in a suit on the first post.

It's like applying lipstick on a pig. Regardless of how much face powder applied and photoshopping done, this Chhotolok chamar still ends up looking like chamar. So does that Shajahan idiot. Bad pedigree takes a long time to wash away.

I hope someone does a hack on their foreign accounts (like the Panama papers) to see how much money they looted so far.

They have 40 lakh Chatra League member? It’s like 2.5% of the total population of Bangladesh

Beside there are various kinds of league members!! If true Awamileague has very strong field base for its support.

I know on many counts I did not agree with you before, but this one I have to unfortunately.

Would you have been happier if someone else from Pakistan did the looting like 'allegedly' before 1971? My folks tell me it is true. :-)

Didn't Nawaz Saab do some looting too recently?

Story of the subcontinent...

Wrong thread brother (I think). :-)

But good point.

A video on the Tunnel Borer Machine (TBM) for this project, which they are claiming as the largest in South Asia. I have no reason to doubt this claim. Wasn't a tunnel borer also used in Northern Pakistan someplace?

Yes we bought two 155 ton TBM machines with 100m2 cross section area from Herrenknecht Germany at cost of 93m usd in 2011. I think these were the first in SA. They were for dam project for tunneling 64km tunnels. Now we using them for different road projects.

64 KM tunnels! Wow! In India's NE region, there are quite a few HYDEL projects have been done with tunnels as well.

The one to be used for the Karnaphuli Project was made by Tianhe in China. It has a cross section area of 115 m2 - a bit larger (Diameter is 12.12m). Tianhe claims that their tunnel borer is the largest so far in South Asia.

I am sure that we will be able to use this Tunnel Borer for other underground projects in Bangladesh such as subways and maybe even in the Chittagong hill tracts region. The roads can be straightened and distances reduced by a magnitude of several factors if tunneling is employed. 30 KM route could become 10 KM sometimes.

There is no shortage of rivers in Bangladesh either - I am sure it can be put to good use later.

I think TBM in Bangladesh, they just brought it for this project. Bangladesh govt didn't purchase it.
