Moroccan–American Treaty of Friendship

In December 1777, Moroccan sultan Muhammad III included America in a list of countries to which Morocco’s ports were open. With that message to foreign consuls for communication to European capitals, Morocco became the first country whose head of state publicly recognized the new United States. Relations were formalized with the Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship negotiated by Thomas Barclay, and signed by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Muhammad III in 1786.

Muhammad III, or Sidi Muhammad ibn Abdallah, came to power in 1757 and ruled until his death in 1790. Prior to his reign, Morocco had experienced thirty years of internecine battles, instability and turmoil. During the thirty-three years Sidi Muhammad ruled he transformed the politics, the economy and the society, putting development of international trade high on his agenda and restoring power to the sultanate. This served to quickly bring respect to Morocco on the international scene. Central to his pursuit of international trade was the negotiation of agreements with foreign commercial powers. He actively began seeking one with the United States well before the war with England was settled in 1783, finally got America’s attention in 1784, and warmly welcomed Thomas Barclay’s arrival to negotiate in 1786. The treaty signed by Barclay and the sultan, and then by Jefferson and Adams, was ratified by the Continental Congress in July of 1787. It has withstood transatlantic stresses and strains for more than 220 years, making it the keystone of the longest unbroken treaty relationship in United States history.

Morroco seems to have escaped from the worst of the recent jihadi violence. Maybe it is because they are too far to the West, geographically?

^^That may be only partially true as Morocco, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and other arab countries were also affected by these political Islamic groups who wanted to overthrow dictatorship govt. and establish a so called Islamic state. However, most arab countries know who their enemies are and have ruthlessly cracked down on them. Before 9/11, Morroco was affected y GIA's bloody insurgency in Algeria. Post 9/11, that got a filip and the militant groups there have banded together under the Al-Qaeda franchise
Insurgency in the Maghreb (2002–present)

Its just that the western media is more focused on the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. Also, the general Pakistani public is still two minds on what the threat really is, while the Moroccan and other Arab govt.s have no confusion in identifying the threat and no problem in explaining that to the people either.

From just a public relations-propaganda point of view ,the US should highlight points like this which show a historical connection between islamic nation and the USA in a postive light.

I was amazed to find out that the there is a carving in the supreme court in washington that "pays homage to the ideals and principles which inspired the american legal system and one of the foundation documents represented is the koran".

In the library of congress in the reading room there is a mural that shows the nations and ideas that contributed to the american civilization the most and one of the ideas is islam.

Lets not forget that one of the founding fathers of america jefferson had his own koran.

Most of US is Islam Friendly , as Justice system in US is petty decent if you can afford a lawyer

The problem only lies in forign policies that are made by Ellite ruling parties and politicians

If you are Muslim outside of US you will face different realities and if you are in US muslim you will face different experience

Once the US politicians are educated - things will improve the younger generation is more educated and good but the old timers only know one thing " carpet bombing approach" and that is where the problem lies
