KARACHI: A bomb disposal squad defused an explosive device weighing 20 kilograms at the Jinnah Hospital in Karachi on Friday, DawnNews reported.


The explosive device was planted inside the praying area of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre’s residential colony. Hospital authorities had contacted the police and the bomb disposal squad as soon as they received the information.

Speaking to media representatives, CCPO Karachi Iqbal Mehmood said that more than 20 kilograms of explosive material, including two detonators, was hidden inside a sack and was planted at the location. The bomb was meant to target people attending Friday prayers.

He added the explosive device was similar to the ones used in the naval bus attacks earlier this year.

Mr Mehmood said security was being tightened around places of worship and the city had been put on high alert. Moreover, search operations were being conducted at mosques and imambargahs across the city.
