Sometimes I wonder what's the point of making so many weapons when no major power can go to war against another because of mutually assured destruction and intertwined economies. Even a third rate country like Russia is able to keep the US away because the cost of war is too high.

Good job though, China is going to overtake the US soon at this rate.

What is "Major Power"? Why do you call some countries as major power while the others as minor power? The answer will tell you why those major power makes so many weapons just like they do until now.

Complicated answer but can be shortened to one word "nukes". What does that tell me?

Nuclear power does not automatically make a country "Major Power". Well, yes. Long time ago, it did. But not now. For example, even when North Korea possess nukes, they still can't be considered as Major Power. You even considered Russia as "Third Rate Country"; when in fact they have the biggest number of nuclear missiles in this world.

I consider it a third rate major power but a major power nonetheless.

Can North Korea be invaded by the US now that they are confirmed to have nukes? I think not.

Well, we don't know yet; as NK still protected by China right now. I don't think that US is afraid to NK, even when they are confirmed to have nukes. As militarily, and technologically, they can't threatened US with their nukes. As Nuclear Warhead needs highly technological weapons to be delivered into the target. Which is they don't possess. Well, at least, nothing that can penetrate the current US anti missile defense. So they are not a major power.

Anti-missile defences have never been the answer, since it costs exponentially more to shoot down a missile than it does to build a missile, which they figured out during the Cold War.

Decoy missiles, decoy warheads, radar reflecting chaff, and such countermeasures are all very cheap to make.

If a missile shield could really protect well against nuclear strikes, then Mutually Assured Destruction would be out the window, and countries could use nuclear weapons at will.

China will not allow USA to attack DPRK.

I would be careful when talking about these things my friend. No one really knows the extent of NK's nuclear program. No one.

And for the US missile defense. Last year the Israel fired 2 Patriot missiles at an UAV that penetrated its airspace from Syria and still failed to bring it down. An F-16 also tried to shoot it down but also failed. Nothing is absolute in this world.

Excerpt from above link at the National Interest / Bill Gertz :coffee:

"...For the US military, one of the most significant intelligence disclosures was revealed by the vibrant Chinese military enthusiast website — not from spies or cyber intrusions into Chinese networks.

The disclosure in March revealed a construction plans for a major buildup on Scarborough Shoal, one of the disputed Spratly Islands located strategically close to Subic Bay in the Philippines, where the US military was planning a buildup of forces under an enhanced US-Philippines defense agreement.

A graphic for the construction bid showed Chinese plans to deploy guided missile frigates at the shoal – located some 150 miles from Subic Bay.

US military officials said other intelligence officials said Scarborough is the third location in the Spratlys for a triangle of military bases..."
