JINZHOU - Badminton superstar Lin Dan announced to skip all international events on the 2013 calendar after winning his third straight National Games singles title on Wednesday.

"I don't need to prove myself through competition anymore," said Lin, who beat world No 3 Du Pengyu 21-18, 21-5 in the final.

Lin, who just made a successful return to action at the Guangzhou world championships, said he will return to China's national team in February 2014.

"I hope to spend more time with my family," he said. "I want to enjoy the life."

"But I will play for the national badminton league which starts this October," he added.

Lin, who represents the People's Liberation Army (PLA), had also won the gold medals in the 2005 and 2009 National Games. This year, he led the PLA to win their first bronze medal in men's team event.

"I feel very proud of that. It's my fourth National Games. I entered the finals all the time and took third consecutive crown today," said Lin, who took the badminton world title for the fifth time last month after one year off since the London Olympics.

"The gold medals from world championships and National Games prove the efficiency of my daily training," added Lin.

Despite some impressive smashes and delicate touches close to the net, Du found it hard to make an impression on the agile opponent as Lin scored four points in a row after 16-15 and took the first set 21-18.

In the second set, Du was struggling to keep up with the speed, while Lin injected pace and attacking play with jump slashes and unreachable shots down the lines, eventually securing the victory 21-5.

Back to the court after one-year absence, Lin still seems unbeatable, however he didn't agree on that.

"I never think that I have no opponent, otherwise I would not train so hard everyday," he said. "Perhaps people only see me standing on the podium, but they know little about my hard training."

SHENYANG, China - Olympic and world champion Sun Yang won the men's 1,500-meter freestyle final on Wednesday to cap his National Games campaign with five gold medals and a bronze.

Sun, who won the 400m and 1500m free at the London Games, was the quickest in the 1500m final in 14 minutes 53.17 seconds, about 22 seconds short of his own world record - 14:31.02.

"I am very tired since it was only three weeks after the World Championships," said Sun. "My form was not as good as it was in London. But I don't need to keep top form all the time."

Hunan's Yang Zhixian and Wang Kecheng came second and third respectively.

The 22-year-old Sun took down the men's 200m freestyle Asian record with a personal best 1:44.47 last Friday. The previous mark was 1:44.80 held by South Korean Park Tae Hwan, who finished behind Sun at the London Games.

Sun won the 400m free in 3:43.68, about two seconds slower than his winning time at the Barcelona World Championships in July, but it is still a world second fastest time this year. He also helped Zhejiang to win two freestyle relay events.

Also on Wednesday, Shanghai's 15-year-old Chen Xinyi was in awesome form as she broke the 50m free national record with 24.61 seconds, which ranked ninth in the world the year. Chen had also won the 100m free and 4X100m medley and freestyle relays.

Shanghai won the women's medley relay in 3:58.43, while Liaoning was second in 4:00.63. Zhejiang came third in 4:02.20.

SHENYANG, China, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 12th Chinese National Games lowered curtain on Thursday afternoon with the principle of frugality passed on to organizers of future Chinese sports events.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang officially declared the Games close in a low-budget closing ceremony held at the gymnasium in the Olympic Sports Center.

Shandong beat Liaoning to top the final medal tally with 65 gold medals, breaking a 20-year tradition that hosts had been winning.

Liaoning was second with 56 golds with Guangdong in third place with 50.5.

With 78 percent of the budget slashed to keep it to a maximum of 800 million yuan (about 130 million U.S. dollars), the Games featured a smooth running and high-level competitions which saw five Asian records, 14 national records and one national youth record renewed.

Hailed as China's mini-Olympics, the Games attracted 9,770 athletes from 38 participating delegations including Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, the People's Liberation Army, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and various sports associations of the trades such as railways, coal mining, forestry, finance, banking and aviation.

The quadrennial games that featured all the 28 Olympic sports, plus baseball, softball and Wushu, used a complex medal counting system, which awarded two golds to the winner of an Olympic gold, one to a world record set in the Olympics and three apiece to the winners of soccer, volleyball and basketball.

Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang stole the limelight by sweeping 10 golds. The 21-year-old had secured five National Games golds without breaking a sweat, thanks to his two-gold, one-world-record performance in London.

Sun went on to collect another five in the men's 200m, 400m and 1,500m freestyle and two team events. He also grabbed a bronze in the men's 100m freestyle to become the most-medaled athlete.

These Games were not without ugly scenes. The Beijing team threw the women's rugby final against Shandong in a protest to controversial refereeing, while twin synchronized swimmers Jiang Wenwen and Jiang Tingting from Sichuan furiously questioned their scores which they believed could be lowered on purpose in favor of the local swimmers.

"There are a lot of good results achieved at the Games," said Xiao Tian, vice director of the State General Administration of Sports. "New records were set in athletics, swimming, weightlifting and cycling and some of the results could have ranked among top three in the World Championships this year."

Guangdong's weightlifter Li Yajun in the women's 53kg class heaved 105kg to surpass the world snatch record of 103kg, although the International Weightlifting Federation does not sanction world marks set at the National Games.
